Buffalo Too Much on Dig Pink Night at the Convo

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision (23-253, 19-25, 25-17, 20-25) Saturday, Oct. 24, to the University at Buffalo on Dig Pink night here at the Convocation Center. Jennifer Swartz carried the Eagles with 12 kills, while Rachel Iquaniello contributed 11 kills and five digs.
As part of the team's "Dig Pink" event, the Eagles wore pink jerseys and a silent auction was held with all of the proceeds going to the Side Out Foundation. Donations were also accepted throughout the evening and fans that donated received a pink t-shirt to commemorate the event.
The decision advances Buffalo to 14-8 overall and 5-4 in the Mid-American Conference, while Eastern remains 3-23 overall and 2-8 in the MAC. The victory was also the Bulls' first-ever victory over the Eagles in this the 14th all-time meeting in the series.
In the first set the Eagles came up short, falling 25-23, as Swartz led the way with five kills and ending the first set with a .571 attack percentage. Errors plagued the Green and White, who committed eight, while Buffalo only recorded four.
Eastern spent most of the second set playing catch up, trailing by seven at one point. Buffalo took the set (25-19). Marisa Hornbaker led the way for the Bulls with six kills and four digs and a .478 attack percentage.
Buffalo came out with a two set advantage over Eastern, but Eastern fought back taking the lead early, with a four point run on the Bulls. The Eagles kept that lead going to win the third set (25-17). Iquaniello helped the team take the set with four kills.
The fourth set went back and forth having five lead changes, but the Bulls pulled away winning the set (25-20).
The Eagles take the court again Thursday, Oct. 29, at Central Michigan University with the first serve at 7 p.m. EMU will then host the Bobcats of Ohio University for a Halloween Spectacular Saturday, Oct. 31, at 3 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
