Men's Track Picked Second, Women 10th in MAC Preseason Poll

Akron men and women picked to win 2009MAC Championship

Cleveland, Ohio — The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's indoor track and field teams were picked to finish second and 10th, respectively, at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship, as voted on by the league's head coaches. The University of Akron men's and women's teams were picked to win.

On the men's side, head coach Brad Fairchild returns 28 letterwinners from last years' squad, including MAC Champions Clint Allen (Muskegon, Mich.-Orchard View), David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic), Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc), as well as several members from the winning 4x400-meter relay and distance medley relay teams.

On the women's side, third-year head coach Sue Parks returns 11 letterwinners from last season and have added 15 new athletes to the squad. The 4x400 foursome of Dejaa Shearer (Canton, Ohio-Glen Oak), Beverly Elcock (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Northrop), Jasmine Gates (Virginia Beach, Va.-Tallwood) and Brittany Lockhart (Canton, Mich.-Salem) all return for another year, while senior Melissa Green (Brecksville, Ohio-Broadview Heights) will close out her career this season.

For the men, Akron is followed by Eastern Michigan in second and Kent State in third. Buffalo and Central Michigan round out this year's poll in fourth and fifth, respectively.

For the women, Western Michigan was tabbed second followed by Miami and Central Michigan. Kent State was picked to finish fifth, while Ball State was selected to place sixth. Buffalo, Toledo, Ohio, Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green and Northern Illinois rounded out this year's preseason poll.

The 2009 MAC Men and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship will take place in Kent, Ohio, and will be hosted by Kent State, Feb. 27-28.
