Women's Tennis Set for Wright State and Detroit

» 2009 SEASON KICKS OFF: The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team is in its 32nd season. The first season of women's varsity intercollegiate tennis at EMU was 1976-77 under the direction of Lucy Parker. The Eagles went 8-7 that season and finished fifth at the Michigan AIAW Championship.
» WHAT'S ON TAP: The Eastern Michigan University tennis team will open the home slate of the 2009 schedule with a pair of instate rivals. Friday, Jan. 30, the Eagles hosting Wright State University for a 1 p.m. match. The Eagles will then take on the University of Detroit Mercy Saturday, Jan. 31 at 8:30 p.m.
» SCOUTING THE RAIDERS: Wright State enters Friday's contest on a season-opening two-match losing skid, falling to Ball State, 6-1, and Eastern Kentucky, 7-0. The Raiders are under the direction of first-year head coach Sean McCaffrey. Jessica Willis has the lone win for WSU, picking it up against Ball State. Wright State finished the 2008 season off with a 3-18 overall mark and 1-6 Horizon League record.
» THE SERIES: The Eagles and Wright State have met just once prior to this season, with the Eagles taking a 9-0 decision from WSU during the 1990-91 season.
» SCOUTING THE TITANS: The Titans enter the weekend with a 1-0 record, with the win coming against IPFW. UDM will take on the University of Toledo on Friday, before the 8:30 p.m. match up with the Eagles. Detoit is under the guidance nine-year head coach Darren Montgomery.
» THE SERIES: The Eagles and Titans have met seven times previously, and EMU has won each meeting. The two teams last met during the 2007-08 season, with the Eagles escaping with a 4-3 decision, Jan. 27.
» TOUGH WEEKEND: The Eagles recorded two losses in their season-opening weekend match, being swept by both No. 65 Michigan State (Jan. 23) and No. 66 Wisconsin (Jan. 25).
» RAY RETURNS FOR A THIRD: Head coach Ryan Ray returns for his third season as the women's tennis coach. In two seasons, his charges have compiled an overall record of 21-23 and 9-7 in the MAC. His 2008 squad finished tied for third in the MAC.
» NEW LOOK: The EMU women's tennis team has a new look, as the Eagles return just one athlete from last year's squad in senior Joanna Woo. Six newcomers joined the squad, including three in January. They are: sophomore Xu Chang and freshmen Karina Ahuja, Rumbidzai Muskwe, Marcela Rivero and Miriam Westerink. Georgia de'Liske-Tarr will sit out the 2009 season and will be eligible to play in January 2010.
» FOREIGN FLAVOR: The women's tennis program has athletes on its roster from all over the world. EMU women's tennis players call seven different countries home. Karina Ahuja hails from India, Xu Chang comes from China, Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr calls Australia home, Rumbidzai Muskwe is from Zimbabwe, Marcela Rivero comes from Bolivia, Miriam Westerink is from the Netherlands and Joanna Woo hails from across the border in Canada.
