Eagles Tame Raiders in 7-0 Sweep

Eagles have quick turnaround before hosting Detroit Saturday
YPSILANTI, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team opened the home portion of its 2009 schedule, sweeping Wright State University, 7-0, Friday afternoon (Jan. 30) in a non-conference dual match at the Chippewa Racquet Club.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-2 on the season while the visiting Raiders drop to 0-3.
“We did a very good job at staying focused and picked up a convincing win,” said head coach Ryan Ray. “We need to be ready for tomorrow night as Detroit in an improved team.”
The Eagles took the early lead in doubles, sweeping all three flights, not allowing the raiders more than three games in any given match. Freshman Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas a Kempis) and senior Joanna Woo (Winnipeg, Manitoba-Vincent Massey Collegiate)defeated Masha Perestsky and Kenisha Webb by a score of 8-2 at the top slot. Freshman Karina Ahuja (New Delhi, India-Modern School) and junior Xu Chang (Beijing, China-JiNan University) teamed up to down Karina Presti and Jackie Garrett 8-3 at the second flight. In the final doubles match, freshmen Rumbidzai Muskwe (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) beat Monica Capozziello and Kelsey Miles by an 8-3 mark.
With the 1-0 leading heading into singles, the Eagles continued to dominate, taking all six singles flights in convincing fashion. Out of a possible 72 games, the Eagles lost just 13. At the first set, Westerink defeated Presti in straight sets, allowing Presti to just one game, 6-1, 6-0. At the second flight, Ahuja had the toughest battle of the day against Peresetsky, winning 7-4, 6-2. Chang allowed her opponent, Webb, just three game wins, defeating her by a 6-1, 6-2 mark. Woo picked up a win at the fourth slot, defeating Garrett, 6-1, 6-0. In the fifth match, Rivero swept her opponent in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-0. In the final match of the day, Muskwe lost just one game, 6-1, 6-0, to Jessica Wills.
The Eagles won't have much time to rest, hostind the University of Detroit Saturday, Jan. 31, with the first serve set for 8:30 p.m. at the Chippewa Racquet Club.
