YPSILANTI, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will look to make it three wins in-a-row Saturday, Jan. 17, when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. for a 1 p.m. showdown against No. 2 Cornell University. The Eagles are 0-2 all-time against the Big Red, but will look to their recent momentum to carry them through to a victory.
EAGLES TAKE ON BIG RED: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will take its two-match winning streak on the road Saturday, Jan. 17, when it goes up against No. 2 Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. at 1 p.m. The Eagles come into the match with a 4-6 season record, while the Big Red own a 4-1 mark.
The Eagles and Big Red last did battle Jan. 4, 2003, with Cornell coming out on top, 31-9. The only other meeting between the two teams was Nov. 23, 1996, when the Eagles were handed a 30-10 setback.
GRITTY MOMENTUM: Head Coach Derek DelPorto has no illusions that beating the No. 2 team in the nation will be an easy task. “We'll need all the momentum we can get going into the next two dual meets as we take on Cornell,” DelPorto said. Despite having the seemingly daunting task of attempting to beat the Big Red on their own turf, the third-year coach wants the experience to be a good one for himself and his team. “Sunday will be fun for us. I haven't competed at Cornell since I coached there so I am looking forward to sitting on the opposing side this time around.”
VIKINGS SHIPPED BACK TO CLEVELAND: The Eagles racked-up a second straight win Sunday, Jan. 11, at Bowen Field House, when they bested the Vikings of Cleveland State University, 31-10. Seven Eagles recorded victories on the day, which included two major decisions, one pin and one technical fall.
Redshirt junior Chris Jenkins got the winning started for the Eagles with a swift and decisive pin at 2:28 of the 133 lb. match. The two major decisions came from junior Sean Clair (13-1) at 141 and redshirt freshman J.J. Johnson (19-5) at 149. True freshman Chris Eggert evened-up his season record at 8-8 with a 20-5 technical decision in the 174 lb. bout.
After trailing 3-0 following the 125 lb. match, Eastern tallied four straight wins to go ahead, 17-4. Cleveland State would get to within only 10 points of the home team throughout the rest of the competition.
“Sunday was a good showing for us and a great start to the New Year,” coach Derek DelPorto said. “We scored bonus points in 4 matches, which helps secure close dual meets. Because of that, we sealed the match after Derek Foore got a win at 184 and that's a good feeling.”
UP THE RANKS: Redshirt freshman J.J. Johnson has been ranked fourth in the Mid-American Conference in the 149 lb. division, the MAC Office announced Wednesday, Jan. 14. Johnson has been on a roll as of late, winning six of his last eight matches to improve his season record to an impressive 12-7 mark.
Likewise, redshirt freshman Wes Schroeder was ranked tied for fourth in the heavyweight division. His season record is 8-10.
IN THE GROOVE: Redshirt junior Sean Clair has a 6-2 record over his last eight bouts, bringing his season mark to 8-5. Sophomore Derek Foore is 5-of-7 in a recent stretch, which puts him at 10-8 on the year.
MAC PREVIEW: After a road loss to the University at Buffalo, Nov. 26, the Eagles continue their march through the conference portion of their schedule with a dual against Central Michigan University, Jan. 22, in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The Chippewas currently rank sixth in the nation.
Eastern then ends the year with three straight inter-conference bouts against Northern Illinois University, Kent State University and Ohio University. The match against Kent State will be the Eagles' third and final home match of the season. It will take place Feb. 15 at 4 p.m.
The Eagles have their final non-conference matches of 2008-09 when they take part in the Gardner-Webb Duals, Jan. 31, in Boiling Springs, N.C.
