FAIRLAWN, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University women’s golf team took a 20-shot lead on opening day of the inaugural Zippy Invitational and never looked back, as the Eagles claimed a 24-stroke victory Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 30. The Eagles dominated the field here at the par-72, 6,060-yard course Rosemont Country Club with a three-round total of 919 (300-304-315), as host Akron finished a distant second with a 943 (321-303-319).

The win marks the 13th overall title in the program’s 15-year history and the ninth during head coach Sandy Wagner’s four-year tenure as head coach. Additionally, the victory marks the widest margin of victory for the Eagles under Wagner, bettering a 20-stroke win the Green and White posted at the EKU Spring Invitational, April 4-5, 2008, in Richmond, Ky.

Sophomore Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.–Lake Orion) made it a clean sweep when she captured low medalist honors with a four-over par 220 (71-73-76) for the three-round event. Peters' victory is the first of her career and her first top five finish of her young career. Her two-day total of 220 is also a career-best for the sophomore, and the score is tied for the fourth-lowest in the program's history. Additionally, Peters' opening round 71 was a career-best for the Lake Orion, Mich. native.

Senior Courtney Aili (Chelsea, Mich.–Chelsea) and Ball State’s Brittany Kelly tied for the runner-up spot with a 230, 10 strokes behind Peters. The runner-up finish is Aili's best career showing, bettering her fourth place finish last year at the Shootout at the Legends, Oct. 9-10, 2007.

Senior Stephany Fleet (Dewitt. Mich.-Dewitt) tied for fifth place with a 232 (73-78-81) for her 11th career top-five finish in 34 all-time events. Junior Marjorie Thuot (Joliette, Ouebec-Therese-Martin) also finished in the tournament's top 10, with a 238 (81-78-79). Freshman Maria Tsiouras (Stockholm, Sweden-Universal School) tied for 37th place in her first collegiate event with rounds of 80, 83 and 90 for a two-day total of 253.

Playing as an individual, sophomore Stephanie Bevington (Ossosso, Mich.-Owosso) finished in 49th place out of 70 with a 259 (86-83-90).

The Eagles will be in action next when they head south from Oct. 10-12 for the LPGA International Xavier Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla.
