FAIRLAWN, Ohio – Eastern Michigan University sophomore Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) fired a career-low 71 in the opening round of the inaugural Zippy Invitational at Rosemont Country Club Monday afternoon, Sept. 29. The Lake Orion, Mich. native followed that up with a second round 73 for the 36-hole lead with a total of 144. Peters holds a six-stroke lead over Toledo's Boram Lee and Ball State's Brittany Kelly, who are tied for second with a 150.
In the team standings, Eastern Michigan recorded a score of 604 (300-304) for a commanding 20-stroke lead for first place heading into the final round of play Tuesday. Host Akron is in second with a 624 (321-303), while Ball State recorded a 630 (317-313) strokes to end the day in third place. Toledo (316-319=635) and Youngstown State (321-317= 638) rounded out the top five of the 12-team tournament.
It was a challenging day for nearly all 70 golfers as just one player, Peters, shot par. The senior duo of Stephany Fleet (Dewitt. Mich.-Dewitt) and Courtney Aili (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) are tied for fourth place with a 151. Fleet notched scores of 73 and 78, while Aili turned in marks of 76 and 75. Junior Marjorie Thuot (Joliette, Ouebec-Therese-Martin) recorded a 159 (81-78) for 17th place and playing in her first collegiate tournament freshman Maria Tsiouras (Stockholm, Sweden-Universal School) managed a 163 (80-83) for a tie for 26th.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Stephanie Bevington (Ossosso, Mich.-Owosso) carded rounds of 86 and 83 for a 169 and a tie for 43rd.
The final round of the Zippy Invitational will get underway with a shotgun start Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.
