Eagles score three goals in three-minute span to put the game out of reach
YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Eastern Michigan University soccer team used a potent offense and a stifling defense to shutout the visiting Miami University RedHawks, 5-0, in the Mid-American Conference opener Friday, Sept. 26 at Scicluna Field. The Eagles improve to 6-2-2 on the season while picking up their first MAC win, while Miami falls to 1-6-1 on the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Manville (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) notched six saves on the afternoon, including a diving stop of a penalty kick, en route to her fourth shutout of the year
The Eagles got the scoring started in the first half, when Katie Zundel (Utica, Mich-Henry Ford II) headed in a Stephanie Janssens (Novi, Mich.-Novi) corner kick, taking a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. Neither team scored for the rest of the half, with EMU taking a 1-0 halftime lead.
The second half started slow, with neither team finding an offensive rhythm. That all changed in the 67th minute, as the Eagles went on to score three goals in a three minute span. Brandi Wood (Westerville, Ohio-Westerville Central) scored her first goal of the season when her throw-in was deflected into the net by a Miami defender.
With the momentum in the Eagles’ favor, the offense kicked into high gear. Senior Jessica Lathrop (Indianapolis, Ind.-Lawrence North) found a streaking Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-Grosse Pointe North) who fired it past the keeper to put the Eagles in front, 3-0. Exactly one minute later, Katie Lozar (Broadview Heights, Ohio-Brecksville) launched a 25-yard shot high into the top of the net, giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead with about 20 minutes remaining.
Detrick was not done scoring, as she scored her team-leading ninth goal of the year off a short cross from Paige Sheridan (Farmington Hills, Mich-Mercy) to push the final margin to 5-0 in favor of the home team with less than five minutes remaining.
The Eagles continue MAC play Sunday, Sept. 28 when they welcome Ball State University to Scicluna Field. It is Alumni Day, with all former players welcome to attend as part of Homecoming festivities. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
