STATESBORO, Ga. – Behind the solid play of senior Hayvolla Leite (Paraiba, Brazil-Indian Hills CC), the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team opened the Bash in the Boro Invitational with a 3-1 victory (25-15, 25-14, 21-25, 25-18) over Charleston Southern University Friday morning here at Hanner Fieldhouse. The event is being hosted by Georgia Southern University.

The victory is the second consecutive for the Eagles, who move to 3-5 this season. On the other side of the equation, the Buccaneers fall to 3-5 with the loss.

Leite paced the EMU assault with a team-best 13 kills and a .370 attack percentage (13-3-27) to go along with a pair of block assists. Senior Jill Wolosiansky (Uniontown, Ohio-Green) and junior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) each notched 12 kills, as the trio combined (37) for almost as many kills as the entire CSU squad (42). Junior Jennifer Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) also joined the offensive attack with 10 kills of her own. Meanwhile, freshman setter Ashley Mason (East Lake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) dished out a career-best 50 assists, while contributing nine digs and a pair of service aces.

For the second straight match Eastern Michigan posted a strong attack percentage, compiling a .274 clip (58-18-146) on the heals of a .315 hitting percentage in a sweep of Wright State earlier this week, Sept. 9.

For Charleston Southern, Amanda Hill recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs to lead the way. Ashlee Kadatz chipped in seven kills on the day to go along with a match-high 23 digs.

After back-and-fourth beginning to the opening frame, Eastern Michigan closed the set on a 14-3 run to capture the 25-15 decision. Leite and Wolosiansky both added four kills a piece in the stanza as EMU took the early 1-0 edge.

The second set was much the same with CSU remaining close until the midway point of the contest. Another huge 19-9 run by the Eagles put CSU in a 2-0 hole heading into the intermission.

The third set would belong to the Buccaneers despite the Eagles jumping out to a four point edge, 7-4, early on. Four kills by Kadatz and three kills from Amy Nokes gave CSU the 25-21 win.

The finale was once again all in favor of head coach Kim Berrington’s crew, as the Eagles cruised to the set and match victory with the 25-18 decision.

Eastern Michigan University returns to action later this afternoon, Sept. 12, with a 5 p.m. affair with the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington. The Eagles then close out tournament play Saturday, Sept. 13, with a noon contest against host Georgia Southern.
