The victory marked the second consecutive season that the Eagles have begun the campaign with a victory and the ninth-time in head coach Kim Berrington’s 13 years at the helm.
With the victory the Eagles improve with 1-0, while the Mountaineers fall to 0-1 on the young season. The Green and White were paced by Leite with 17 kills and a .297 attack percentage. Junior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) notched a double-double with 14 kills and 19 digs. Getting her first collegiate star, freshman Ashley Mason (East Lake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) also turned in 45 assists, eight digs, and three kills for the Eagles.
For Appalachian State, Carla Durham recorded 15 kills and five total blocks. Jordan Jesberg was the only other ASU player to reach double figures in kills with 11. The Mountaineers outhit the Eagles (.145 to .142) and controlled the net (9.0 blocks to 4.0). However ASU had problems serving, committing 17 service errors.
ASU won the opening set 25-22 behind a strong offensive attack as three Mountaineers notched three kills. Eastern was able to regroup in the following stanza, as Leite knocked down four kills to lead the way.
In a back-and-fourth match, Appalachian State jumped out to an early 6-1 edge. The margin would grow to six points, 20-14, before Eastern Michigan would storm back on an 11-3 run to capture the set by a score of 25-23.
The finale once again proved to be hotly contested, as neither side was able go gain much of an advantage. However, down the stretch the Eagles were able to get just a little breathing room as consecutive attack errors by the Mountaineers sealed the EMU victory.
Eastern Michigan returned to the court Saturday morning, Aug. 30, with a 10:30 a.m. match versus host William and Mary. The Eagles then take on the University of Maryland Baltimore County at 5 p.m. in the nightcap.
