Strauss and Scherer named second team; Skodinski to freshman team

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Senior Ashley Strauss (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) and sophomore Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) were both named second team All-Mid-American Conference while freshman Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) was named to the All-MAC freshman team, the conference office announced Wednesday, May 7. It is the third consecutive second team selection for Strauss, while Scherer picked up All-MAC accolades for the second consecutive season.

Strauss led the league in batting average in both overall games (.388) and in MAC games (.518). She compiled a 10-game hitting streak this season (April 25-May 3), while totaling 17 multi-hit games. She also belted 17 doubles this season, tying the single season mark. The senior first baseman was named MAC Player of the Week once this year, after hitting .636 (7-for-11) with two doubles and four runs scored, including the winning run in a come-from-behind victory against Ohio (April 20). In a doubleheader at Buffalo (May 2), she went 6-for-8 in the two games, including a perfect 4-for-4 mark in the first game. She ends her career in the Green and White with 41 doubles, good for third on the all-time list. Her career batting average of .318 and fielding percentage of .986 ties her for second-best in a career.

Scherer belted 11 home runs this season, tying her for the most in the conference. She now has 22 home runs in her short career, leaving her only two behind the all-time mark of 24. The sophomore outfielder had a .312 batting average, good for second on the team. She led the Eagles in slugging percentage (.630), runs scored (30), RBI (20), home runs (11) and total bases (87). This season, Scherer became the first player in EMU history to hit for the cycle. Against San Diego (Feb. 27), she hit a home run, a triple, a double and a single while knocking in five runs to help EMU to a 10-3 victory.

Skodinski started all 45 games at shortstop this season, replacing two-time MAC Player of the Year Lauren Clark. She hit .264 overall, with nine doubles, two triples and three home runs. The freshman shortstop had nine multi-hit games this season, good for third on the team, while also compiling three games with multiple RBIs. In a weekend sweep of Ohio (April 19-20), Skodinski went 3-for-5 with a double and a two-run home run, helping the Eagles defeat the Bobcats, 8-0 and 3-2.
The Eagles went 15-30 (6-12 MAC) this season, just missing out on a fourth consecutive MAC Tournament berth.
