Strauss and Scherer earn honors for first time

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Senior Ashley Strauss (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) and sophomore Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) were selected to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team, the conference office announced Wednesday, May 28. It is the first selection to the team for both players.

Strauss, an art/graphics design major, carries a 3.41 GPA. She led the league in batting average in both overall games (.388) and in MAC games (.518). She compiled a 10-game hitting streak this season (April 25-May 3), while totaling 17 multi-hit games. She also belted 17 doubles this season, tying the single season mark. The senior first baseman was named MAC Player of the Week once this year, after hitting .636 (7-for-11) with two doubles and four runs scored, including the winning run in a come-from-behind victory against Ohio (April 20). In a doubleheader at Buffalo (May 2), she went 6-for-8 in the two games, including a perfect 4-for-4 mark in the first game. She ends her career in the Green and White with 41 doubles, good for third on the all-time list. Her career batting average of .318 and fielding percentage of .986 ties her for second-best in a career.

Scherer has a 3.63 GPA as an accounting major, earning the first academic award of her career. Scherer belted 11 home runs this season, tying her for the most in the conference. She now has 22 home runs in her short career, leaving her only two behind the all-time mark of 24. The sophomore outfielder had a .312 batting average, good for second on the team. She led the Eagles in slugging percentage (.630), runs scored (30), RBI (20), home runs (11) and total bases (87). This season, Scherer became the first player in EMU history to hit for the cycle. Against San Diego (Feb. 27), she hit a home run, a triple, a double and a single while knocking in five runs to help EMU to a 10-3 victory.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered.
