Scherer hits 21st homer of her career

OXFORD, Ohio – Despite a first inning home run by Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe), the Eastern Michigan University softball team fell to Mid-American Conference opponent Miami University, 9-2, here Sunday, April 27 at the Miami Softball Stadium. EMU is now 13-26 (5-9 MAC).

The Eagles struck first, but could not overcome a powerful first inning in which MU scored four runs. Freshman Kari Chambers (Woodstock, Ga.-Woodstock) lasted only two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on four hits. Chambers was charged with the loss, dropping her record to 4-13. Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy’s Priory) came on to pitch five and a third innings of relief, allowing eight hits and five runs.

The MU bats were hot, totaling 12 hits on the afternoon to only four EMU. Scherer went 2-for-3 at the plate, leading the way for the Eagles.

Scherer started the game off with a bang, hitting the first pitch out of the park, putting the Eagles up 1-0. It was the 21st homer of her career, leaving her only three behind Lauren Clark’s all-time mark of 24.

The Eagle lead did not last long, as Miami exploded for four first-inning runs. Head coach Karen Baird was forced to make a pitching change in the first inning, bringing in Caro to record the final out of the first frame.

After going two innings without scoring, the Eagles managed another run in the fourth inning when freshman Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Ashley Strauss (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton). Strauss’s run cut the Miami lead to two, 4-2.

Miami scored another run in the bottom of the fifth, pushing the lead to three, 5-2. The RedHawks tacked four more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, extending the lead to 9-4. With two out, Sarah Bilstrom hit a bases clearing double, plating three for the home team. Bilstrom then scored when Breanna Robinson ripped a double to center. Caro struck out the last batter to end the inning.

The Eagles were unable to rally in the seventh, dropping the game to the RedHawks, 9-2.

The Green and White are back in action Wednesday, April 30 when they take on the Oakland Grizzlies in Rochester, Mich. The two teams are set to play a doubleheader, with first pitch coming at 3 p.m. at the OU Softball Field.
