Jenny Scherer moves into third on the all-time home run list
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a hard-fought 5-3 Mid-American Conference contest to the University of Toledo, here today, April 13 at Scott Park. The Eagles are now 9-21 (1-5 MAC) on the season.
The game was delayed almost three and a half hours, due to a wintry mix that was falling in Toledo. The teams were patient in waiting for the weather to clear, finally starting around 4:25 p.m.
Freshman Kari Chambers (Woodstock, Ga.-Woodstock) started the game on the mound for the Eagles, going 4.2 innings and without a decision. The freshman gave up three runs on six hits while striking out three. Freshman Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy’s Priory) came on in relief in the fifth inning and picked up the loss. Caro pitched 1.1 innings and gave up two runs on three hits.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when lead-off batter Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) blasted her seventh home run of the season. The shot to right field was the 18th of her career, putting her third on the all-time list.
The lead was increased to three after a two-run third inning. Freshman Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) hit a two-run triple to right center, pushing the score to 3-0 in favor of the Eagles.
UT scored four runs on five hits in the fifth inning, taking its first lead of game. The Rockets tied it up with a two-run homer to right field, forcing a pitching change by the Eagles. Caro came in and gave up one more run, giving the Rockets a one-run advantage after five innings. The Midnight Blue and Gold tacked on another run in the sixth, increasing the lead to two runs.
Sophomore pitcher Michelle Hletko (Westmont, Ill.-Westmont) pinch hit to begin the seventh inning, but flied out to centerfield. Sophomore Jessica Patterson (Ionia, Mich.-Ionia) drew a walk to reach base, but the next two Eagle batters could not reach base, ending the game.
EMU will next travel down Washtenaw Ave. for a non-conference tilt with the Michigan Wolverines. The county rivals will square off Wednesday, April 16 with first pitch at 6 p.m.
