BOCA RATON, Fla. — For the second consectutive day, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team opened up a 2-0 lead over the Florida Atlantic University Owls, but failed to hold onto the lead, dropping the 5-2 decision tonight here at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla.
Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) led the Eagles with two hits on the day while Jeff Davis (Avondale, Ariz.-Westview) and Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) each tallied RBI singles, accounting for the Eagle offense on the day.
EMU wasted no time in jumping out to the early 2-0 lead. Gulliver singled to right center in the top of the first and stole second to put the Green and White in scoring position early on. Davis’ bunt single brought in Gulliver and advanced Aaron Powell (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston), who had reached on a fielding error, to second. Leonard singled to center, scoring Powell and giving the Eagles the lead for the second straight game against the Owls.
Sophomore Kevin Sikora (Youngstown, Ohio-Boardman) held the Owls in check until the fourth inning when a Travis Ozga double to right field drove in William Block, who had doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning.
In the bottom half of the sixth the Owls were able to manufacture another run off Sikora, knotting the game at 2-2. Tom Hatcher singled to center and was thrown out at second by Sikora, but not before Mike McKenna crossed the plate to tie the game.
Senior Dan Puls (Alpena, Mich.-Alpena) relieved Sikora in the bottom of the eighth and walked two of the three batters faced. With the Owls in scoring position, junior Matt Shoemaker (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) took over for Puls (0-2). Shoemaker’s first batter faced put the Owls in front for good. McKenna, who tied the game earlier in the sixth, launched a three-run homer over the center field wall to give FAU the 5-2 lead. Nick Criaris grounded into a double play to end the FAU eighth.
Nick Melendres was able to hold off an Eagle rally in the top of the ninth, giving FAU the come-from-behind win for the second straight day.
