Box Score

BOCA RATON
, Fla. The Eastern Michigan University baseball team broke a 9-9 tie with a two-run ninth inning, to go up 11-9 only to fall in the bottom half of the frame. The Green and White surrendered three runs and fell to Florida Atlantic University, 12-11, for the third straight day here at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla. A costly error in the final stanza gave FAU its fourth win of the year while EMU drops to 0-9.

Florida Atlantic opened up scoring early on, jumping out to a 5-0 lead through five innings.

EMU exploded in the top half of the sixth, scoring a season-high nine runs on five hits to go up 9-5. Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) and Steve Bradshaw (Lapeer, Mich.-West) were each hit by pitches to lead the inning off. Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) reached on a fielder’s choice, advancing Gulliver to third. A Jeff Beliveau wild pitch brought in Gulliver and sent Marshall to second.

Jeff Davis (Avondale, Ariz.-Westview) singled to center and Aaron Powell (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) walked to load the bases. Marshall scored to make it 5-2 after Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) walked.

Mike Boyd’s (Huntington Woods, Mich.-Berkley) three RBI double to left field tied the game at 5-5. Kyle Rhoad (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood) kept the EMU rally going, singling to right center to drive in Boyd and give the Eagles their first lead of the game at 6-5. Gulliver tacked on an RBI single before Bradshaw’s double to center capped off the scoring for EMU, ending the inning in front 9-5.

FAU answered in the bottom half of the sixth, plating four runs to knot the game at 9. Mike McKenna’s three-run homer over the center field wall made up for the damage in the top half of the frame.

Entering the ninth tied at 9-9, Marshall led off with a double to left center. After Davis struck out looking, Powell was intentionally walked, putting base runners on first and second with one out. Aaron Crooks’ (Toledo, Ohio-Ottawa Hills) single loaded the bases before Boyd was walked, bringing the score to 10-9 in favor of EMU. Powell scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a two-run advantage before Gulliver flied out to end the inning.

Travis Ozga walked to lead off the FAU ninth and advanced to third off a Tom Hatcher double down the left field line. Junior Matt Shoemaker (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) was brought in for Kevin Wammes (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton). Alex Silversmith grounded out to third, driving in Ozga to cut the deficit to 11-10. Nick Arata reached on a fielding error by Gulliver, allowing Silversmith and Hatcher to score and win the game.
