Worley and Grigg pave way for third Mid-American Conference win

MUNCIE, Ind. — The Eastern Michigan University women’s gymnastics team won its third straight Mid-American Conference, defeating the Ball State University Cardinals, 192.550-189.800, here Friday evening at Irving Gymnasium. Senior Jolene Worley (Orlando, Fla.-William R. Boone) and sophomore Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ontario-Widdifield) led the way for the Eagles, with each collecting multiple medalist honors.
MUNCIE, Ind. — The Eastern Michigan University women’s gymnastics team won its third straight Mid-American Conference, defeating the Ball State University Cardinals, 192.550-189.800, here Friday evening at Irving Gymnasium. Senior Jolene Worley (Orlando, Fla.-William R. Boone) and sophomore Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ontario-Widdifield) led the way for the Eagles, with each collecting multiple medalist honors.
With the win, the Eagles move to 5-3 (3-1 MAC), while the Cardinals fall to 0-7 (0-5 MAC).
The Green and White captured the top four slots on the vault, with Grigg taking top honors with a 9.775. Senior Tawna Bennett (Jacksonville, Fla.-Edward White) and junior Stefanie James (West Windsor, N.J-WW- -P North) tied for second place, posting a 9.700. Finishing in fourth place with a 9.675 was Monica Lucas (Winston-Salem, N.C.-Reynolds).
On the uneven bars Grigg again captured top honors, tying Ashley Jacob with a 9.750. Lucas finished close behind in third place with a 9.725. Tying for fourth place on the bars was Worley and Duyen Zu Vuong (Ottawa, Ontario-DelaSalle), each posting a 9.650.
Worley continued her dominance on the beam this year, picking up first place tonight with a 9.750. Freshman Nikole Viltz (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Carmel) placed second, scoring a 9.700. Rounding out the top five was Grigg and Grace Crouch (Bellbrook, Ohio-Bellbrook), each posting a 9.500 for fifth place.
Bennett paced the Eagles on the floor, finishing in second place with a 9.700. Also placing in the top-five on the floor exercise was James, whose 9.625 was good enough for fifth place.
In the all-around, Worley’s 38.500 was enough to best Cobie Zuk of Ball State, who posted a 37.975.
The Eagles will be in action again, Feb. 27 and 29, making their way out west to Colorado Springs, Col. for consecutive meets with the Air Force Academy. Both meets are set to kick-off at 6 p.m. (MT)
