Eagles and Falcons meet again Friday night

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Eastern Michigan University women’s gymnastics team started its winter break trip to Colorado Springs off with a bang, winning every event on its way to defeating the Air Force Academy, 191.575-189.500, Feb. 27, in Cadet West Gym. Senior Jolene Worley (Orlando, Fla.-William R. Boone) paced the Green and White, winning three events on the night.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Eastern Michigan University women’s gymnastics team started its winter break trip to Colorado Springs off with a bang, winning every event on its way to defeating the Air Force Academy, 191.575-189.500, Feb. 27, in Cadet West Gym. Senior Jolene Worley (Orlando, Fla.-William R. Boone) paced the Green and White, winning three events on the night.
With the win, the Eagles move to 6-3, (2-1 MAC), while the Falcons fall to 1-11 on the year.
Senior Tawna Bennett (Jacksonville, Fla.-Edward White) started the Eagles off on the right track, winning the vault with a 9.825, a personal season and team high. Worley’s season-high mark of 9.775 was good for second while Mickayla Balow (Blaine, Minn.-Spring Lake Park High) Mickayla Balow (Blaine, Minn.-Spring Lake Park High tied Brittany Dutton for third with a 9.725, her season-high.
The Eagles posted the top four scores on the uneven bars, and coincidentally they were the same score, creating a four-way tie for first amongst the Green and White. Worley and Bennett were joined by juniors Duyen Zu Vuong (Ottawa, Ontario-DelaSalle) and Monica Lucas (Winston-Salem, N.C.-Reynolds) atop the podium with a 9.625.
On the balance beam, Vuong and senior Maureen Moss (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren, Township) shared top honors with a 9.750. Coming in tied for third were teammates Worley and senior Jennifer Charlebois (Oshawa, Ontario-Eastdale Collegiate), each carding a 9.700.
On the floor Worley won her second event of the night, scoring a 9.700 and edging Vuong and Balow for top honors.
Although the Eagles only had one gymnast qualify for the all-around, Worley made the most, beating out a field of four Falcons for first place, scoring a 38.800.
The Eagles and Falcons will meet again Friday, Feb. 29, in Cadet West Gym. Meet time is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
