Women's Golf Tees It Up at the Red Rock Invitational

WOMEN’S GOLF SWINGS BACK INTO ACTION AT RED ROCKS INVITATIONAL: When the Eastern Michigan University women’s golf team steps on the course at the Oakcreek Country Club, March 1, it will have been 144 days since the Eagles closed the fall campaign in a record-setting fashion.
The Green and White will hope to carry the momentum over from the fall at the par-72, 6,089-yard layout for the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz., March 1-2, hosted by Northern Arizona University.
Saturday will be a shot gun start at 12:30 p.m., while Sunday will start at 8 a.m. with a shot gun start.
The field for the 2008 Red Rocks Invitational will include 15 teams – Northern Arizona, Montana, South Carolina Upstate, Southern Utah, Utah Valley, Northern Colorado, Montana State, Portland State, Wyoming, Idaho State, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, UC Riverside, Oral Roberts and CSU Northridge.
Last season the Eagles finished fifth at the event with a two-round total of 627 (314-313), March 3-4, 2007. Catherine Fortin earned her sixth top-20 finish of the season and second top-10 showing of the spring by tying for 10th place with a 36-hole score of 152. Fortin finish four strokes off the pace set by co-champions Liliana Alvarez of Northwestern and Diana Hong of Washington State, who both finished with two-round totals of 147.
Successful Fall propels team: After two fall championships, one at the NIU Brickyard Invitational and the other at the Shootout at the Legends, the Eastern Michigan University women’s golf team holds its highest national ranking ever. The Eagles ranked 52nd according to the most recent GolfStat head-to-head standings as of Oct 17. The women have a 171-54 NCAA Division I record.
After competing in four events this fall, all with top ten finishes, the team as a scoring average of 78.7. Senior Catherine Fortin leads the team with a scoring average of 73.5 after 11 rounds of golf. Junior Stephany Fleet follows closely behind with a 74.5 scoring average also after shooting 11 rounds.
Fleet and Fortin were both named Mid-American Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for the weeks of Oct. 3 and Oct. 10 respectively. Along with Golfer of the Week, Fleet has been making waves of her own in the collegiate golf world. She captured the Wolverine Invitational Title, on Sept 30, in Ann Arbor, Mich. by shooting rounds of 72, 70, and 77 to finish six-over par. The Eagles placed fifth with a team score of 924. The previous week Fortin placed third at the Lady Northern Invitational, with the team finishing seventh overall.
