YPSILANTI, Mich. – The leaves on the trees have changed colors and the calendar has flipped to the month of November. Those hints of impending winter chill can also mean one other thing – the Eastern Michigan University basketball teams are about to hit the court. Both the men's and women's basketball teams will host a pair of exhibition games Sunday, Nov. 9, beginning at 2 p.m. in the Convocation Center. Admission is free to the general public.
The women's squad will tangle with Marygrove College at 2 p.m., followed by the men's team playing host to Alma College at 4 p.m. If you cannot make it to the Convocation Center, fans can still follow all action via live stats at EMUEagles.com.
Sunday's women's game will be the first between the Eagles and Mustangs on the hardwood. The second game of the day marks the first time since Feb. 22, 1967 that EMU and Alma have squared off. Eastern leads the all-time series that dates back to 1908, 35-21.
EMU's women’s basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the West Division according to the 2008-09 Mid-American Conference preseason poll by the voting members of the MAC News Media Association. The announcement was made in Cleveland, Oct. 30, as part of the conference’s women’s basketball Media Day at Quicken Loans Arena.
Head coach AnnMarie Gilbert directed the 2007-08 Eagles to a 17-12 overall record and an 11-5 conference mark. For the team’s efforts, Eastern claimed a share of the West Division title, its third division title in the past five seasons. Repeating last year’s success will be a challenging endeavor for Gilbert and her staff, as the Eagles return just one starter to the lineup in 2008-09. Six letterwinners return to the equation for EMU, while 10 newcomers will don the Green and White jersey for the first time.
Meanwhile, the EMU men's basketball team was picked to finish in the runner-up spot in the West Division in the 2008-09 MAC preseason poll. The second-place selection was the best predicted finish for EMU in fourth-year head coach Charles E. Ramsey's tenure. Eastern also received two votes to win the MAC Postseason Tournament championship.
Season and single-game tickets are on sale at the EMU Ticket Office by calling 734.487.2282.
