JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team dropped a 73-61 loss to the Red Storm from St. John’s University tonight, Monday, Nov. 24, at Carnesecca Arena in the team’s third game of the Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off tournament. The Eagles drop to 1-4 with the loss, while the Red Storm improves to 4-1 with the victory.

Despite matching St. John’s basket for basket in the second half, the Eagles couldn’t find an answer for the Red Storm on the glass, as St. John’s out-rebounded EMU, 50-28.

A two point advantage seconds into the game would be EMU’s only lead of the game, as the team quickly found themselves down 10 with 14:04 remaining and by as many as 17 points in the first frame. But the Eagles managed to weather the Red Storm going into intermission, cutting St. John’s lead to 37-25 at the half. Junior forward Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) recorded nine points and three boards in the first 20 minutes, and finished the contest with 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and three steals.

The Red Storm came out firing to start the second half, taking a 20 point advantage with 12:29 remaining, as back-to-back jumpers by Quincy Roberts gave St. John’s its largest lead of the game. The Eagles limited the deficit to 12 points with under a minute to play, but were unable to mount a comeback, as the Red Storm’s inside play proved to be the deciding factor.

Sophomore forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) played a team-high 35 minutes and recorded 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while freshman forward Branden Harrison (Houston, Texas-Milby) pitched in 12 points off the bench on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.

As a team, the Eagles shot 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the free throw line and 37.9 percent from the field (22-of-58), while the Red Storm shot 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the charity stripe and 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the field.

The Eagles will wrap up the Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off tomorrow evening when they take on the Big Red from Cornell University at 5:45 p.m. at St. John’s Carnesecca Arena. The Eagles hold a 2-1 all-time mark against the Big Red, but the two teams have not met since Dec. 2, 1978 when Cornell claimed a 90-81 overtime win in Ypsilanti.
