JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team dropped its final game of the Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off tournament, as the Big Red from Cornell University handed the Eagles a 67-54 loss tonight, Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Carnesecca Arena on the campus of St. John’s University.

The loss drops EMU to 1-5 this season, while Cornell improves to 4-2 with the win.

Redshirt freshman point guard L.J. Frazier (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) and redshirt sophomore forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) each finished with a team-high 11 points, while senior guard Zane Gay (Olivet, Mich.-Olivet) and junior center Kyle Dodd (Roockwood, Ont.-John F. Ross) pitched in nine and eight off the bench, respectively.

The EMU offense came out firing in the first frame, as back-to-back jumpers in the post from Dodd gave EMU an 18-10 advantage with 10:49 remaining in the first half. But the Bears would eventually put the breaks on the Eagle offense, as a 13-5 run made it a 23-all game with 5:53 remaining in the first half. Cornell would take a 31-28 lead going into intermission, as Geoff Reeves led all scorers with eight points in the first 20 minutes.

Cornell’s potent defense held the EMU offense in check in the second half, and the inside play of Jeff Foote gave the Big Red an 11 point advantage with 11:59 remaining in the game. The Eagles would limit the deficit to nine points down the stretch, but couldn’t manage to find a rhythm on offense in the second half, as the team shot just 39.3 percent in the final 20 minutes.

The Eagles committed 15 turnovers in the loss, while the Big Red turned the ball over just four times in the game. Cornell’s Ryan Wittman led all scorers with 19 points.

The Eagles will be in action again on Saturday, Nov. 29 when they head to Providence, R.I. to take on the Bears from Brown University at 1 p.m. The Bears played spoiler last season for EMU’s home opener, as they escaped Ypsilanti with a 74-55 win on Nov. 9, 2007.
