Volleyball Sends Seniors Off With a 3-2 Victory Over Kent State

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team finished out the regular season on a high-note defeating Kent State University in five sets, 3-2 (25-17, 25-17, 20-25, 23-25,15-10), Saturday afternoon, Nov. 15, in Mid-American Conference action at the Convocation Center. Following the contest the Eagles honored its seniors Jill Wolosiansky (Uniontown, Ohio-Green) and Hayvolla Leite (Paraiba, Brazil-Indian Hills CC).
The Eagles will be the No. 10 seed in the upcoming 2008 MAC Tournament and will travel to No. 7 Ball State University for a first-round showdown Tuesday evening, Nov. 18. First serve will be at 7 p.m. at Worthen Arena in Muncie, Ind. Tuesday's showdown will mark the fifth time the Eagles and Cardinals have squared off in the postseason tournament. BSU has won all four previous MAC Tournament meetings, including posting a 3-2 quarterfinal victory at the SeaGate Centre in Toledo, Ohio, Nov. 19, 2005.
The victory snapped the Eagles’ five-match losing skid and upped their record to 10-21 overall and 4-12 n the MAC. On the flip side, Kent State drops to 13-15 on the season and 3-13 in league play..
Junior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) and Leite led the team in kills with 19 each. Leite also paced the squad with a .400 hitting percentage and 18 digs.
The Eagles hit for a stellar .481 in the first set against the Golden Flashes. The Eagles took the set 25-17 and looked to set pace for victory in the final match of the season.
The Eagles continued their momentum in to the second set as they mirrored the score from the first set, 25-17. Leite and sophomore Jennifer Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) both led the Eagles with four kills each in the second set. The Golden Flashed continued to struggle, hitting for only .173 through two sets, while the Eagles hit at .385.
The third set was a turnaround for both teams. The Golden Flashes had an attack percentage of .195, where the Eagles only attacked for a .057 hitting percentage. Eastern Michigan, who only had five total errors coming in to third set, committed eight total errors in the set as KSU took the frame by a score of 25-20.
The Eagles and the Golden Flashes fought back and forth in the fourth set as the score was tied seven times. Eastern Michigan was not able to pull out the set win as Kent outscored the Eagles 25-23.
The Eagles were able to pull out the victory in the fifth set, 15-10.
