EMU and Purdue set for two-day dual meet
FOR THE 33RD TIME: The 2008-09 season marks the 33rd season in Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving. The program was started in 1976 under head Mike Cook with the Eagles going 5-3-1 in the inaugural year. EMU has had eight coaches throughout the years, with Peter Linn taking over in 2004. As women’s coach, Linn has helped the Eagles to two Mid-American Conference Championships while boasting a 38-11 overall record and a 26-8 MAC mark in four years.
SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS: Purdue enters this weekend’s action with an 0-4 mark, dropping dual meets to Louisville, Northwestern, Notre Dame and MAC foe Miami. Head coach John Klinge is in his first year at the helm of Purdue women’s swimming after spending the past five seasons as a men’s assistant at Ohio State University. The Boilers and Eagles have only faced off once prior to this meet, with Purdue notching a 425-313 during the 1977-78 campaign.
LINN AND THE BIG TEN: This weekend’s meet will mark the third time that head coach Peter Linn has faced a Big Ten Conference opponent, posting a 1-1 record. In a double dual meet last season, Jan. 19, 2007, the Eagles fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes (105-195) before defeating the Michigan State Spartans (173.5-124.5). The win against Michigan State also marked the first time since the 1994-95 season that EMU knocked off a Big Ten opponent.
EAGLES STAY PERFECT AGAINST BUFFALO: The Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team has never dropped a dual meet to the University at Buffalo and made it 13 straight against the Bulls, Nov. 7. EMU defeated the Bulls, 165-129 to remain perfect against UB.
EMU INVITATIONAL ON THE HORIZON: After this weekend’s action in West Lafayette, the Eagles will have a few weeks off before hosting the annual EMU Invitational, Dec. 5-6. The Eagles are looking to win the event for the first time since the 2002-03 season. EMU has finished as runner-up the past five seasons.
STAY LIVE WITH THE EAGLES: A new feature for the 2008-09 season will be the addition of live meet scoring for all home meets at Jones Natatorium. Go to www.EMUEagles.com to access the live scoring.
CSCAA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN TEAM: The women’s swimming and diving team was selected as one of the Academic All-American teams by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The Eagles carried a 3.469 GPA during the 2007-08 season, placing them 12th in the country in overall GPA.
JONESIN’ FOR EMU: The Eagles will have six home meets, including the annual EMU Invitational, at Jones Natatorium this season. The invitational is up next at home for the Eagles, slated for Dec. 5 and 6.
