FOREST OAKS, N.C. – Eastern Michigan University junior Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) fired a one-under par 145 (76-69) on the opening day of the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate at the par 72, 7,197 yard Forest Oaks Country Club. The Portage, Mich. native sits in a five-way tie for 11th place with the 36-hole total.
The University of Michigan shot a 282 in the afternoon round to gain a four-shot lead over Michigan State University and five-shot advantage over first-round leader Duke University. The Wolverines sit at 575, followed by the Spartans’ 579 and Blue Devils at 580. Eastern Michigan posted rounds of 313 and 280 for 11th place after day one with a total of 593.
Senior Christopher Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside) trails Lemons by three strokes in a tie for 29th place with 148 (78-70). Junior Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) is at five-over par with a 149 (79-70) in a tie for 34th. Sophomore Nic Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) notched a 151 (80-71) in a tie for 45th, while sophomore Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario-Hespeler Secondary) carded a 156 (81-75) in a 66th place.
Eight teams – Louisville, Mississippi State, Duke, Michigan State, Memphis, Michigan, Purdue and EMU – participated in the NCAA Tournament last spring. Currently, Michigan is ranked No. 25 in the Golf World/Nike Coaches Poll with Duke close behind as the first team in the others receiving votes category. Michigan State, Pepperdine, Louisville, Mississippi State are also currently receiving votes in the Nike Poll. According to the Golfstat rankings (based on final place in tournaments), Pepperdine (28), Michigan State (34), Minnesota (35), Duke (37), Michigan (41), Louisville (42) and Mississippi State (45) are all ranked in the top 50 currently.
Tuesday’s final round gets underway at 8:30 am with tee times off Nos. 1 and 10.
