AMHERST, N.Y. -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team remained perfect against the University at Buffalo Saturday evening, Oct. 25, sweeping the Bulls 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-17) to improve to 13-0 in the all-time series. The shutout was also the 200th EMU victory for head coach Kim Berrington, as she is now 200-189 in 13 seasons as the head coach of the Eagles.
Leading the way for the Eagles was sophomore Jennifer Swartz (Canton, Mich.-St. Mary’s Catholic), hitting .455 with six kills. Junior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) had a team-high eight kills, while digging 10 balls. Seniors Jill Wolosiansky (Uniontown, Ohio-Green) and Hayvolla Leite (Paraiba, Brazil-Indian Hills CC) recorded seven kills a piece. Freshman Ashley Mason (East Lake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) had 28 assists on the evening.
The Eagles and Bull battled for much of the first set, tying the match six times. With the match tied at 16, the Green at white began to pull away. A UB ball handling error gave Eastern the 17-16 edge, one that would never go away, as the Eagles held on for the 25-22 set win.
The second set was much of the same, as the two teams stayed close the entire match. Eastern took the early 5-2 lead and the Eagles and Bulls traded points back and forth, with the Green and White holding the slight edge. The Bulls took their first lead, 15-14 but Eastern would not go away. With the match tied at 23, two Buffalo attack errors gave the Eagles the 25-23 set win.
EMU took a commanding 12-4 lead in set three and never saw it go away. The Eagles led by as much as 13 at one point, 22-9. The Bulls continued to hold on, adding more point to their tally, but the Eagles were too much, taking the 25-17 set win.
The Eagles will return to the friendly confines of the EMU Convocation center Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, as they host Ball State University and the University of Toledo. Friday’s match against the Cardinals will begin at 7 p.m., while the Saturday match begins at 3 p.m.
