YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team continued Mid-American Conference play, cruising to victory over the visiting University of Toledo Rockets, 68-44, here Tuesday evening at the Convocation Center. EMU has won three of its last four games overall, and improve to 3-2 in MAC action.
With the win the Eagles improve to 7-10 (3-2 MAC) on the year while Toledo falls to 5-12 (2-3 MAC).
Eastern Michigan was lead by junior point guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright), who poured in a game-high 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, including 3-of-8 from downtown. Sophomore Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) chipped in 14 for the Green and White on 5-of-6 shooting. Tyrone Kent led all Rocket scorers, finishing with 16 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field.
The Eagles finished the game shooting 57.1 percent (28-of-49) from the field while the Rockets were held to just 32.6 percent (15-of-46). EMU also held a 31-25 advantage in the rebound category.
The Eagles raced out of the gate to a 24-5 lead just 10 minutes into the game. Leading the way for the Green and White was Medlock with 14 first-half points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, including 2-of-5 from behind the arc. Junior Zane Gay (Olivet, Mich.-Olivet) chipped in with eight first-half points of his own coming on 4-of-6 shooting.
EMU controlled the tempo and crashed the boards during the first half, holding the Rockets to just seven points 11 minutes into the contest. A Medlock three pointer at the 7:25 mark gave the Eagles their largest lead of the half at 23. Toledo responded with a 5-0 run over the ensuing four minutes, cutting the lead to 18. Eastern regained its composure and closed out the half on a 7-2 run with two lay-ups coming from Medlock.
The Green and White shot a blistering 63.0 percent (17-of-27) in the first half while holding the Rockets to just 27.3 percent (6-of-22). EMU also led the battle of the boards in the first half, 20-8.
Both teams traded baskets for the first nine minutes of the second half, with senior Travis Lewis (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Loy Norrix) extending the Eagle lead to 26 on a three-pointer at the 10:59 mark. Toledo followed with a 5-0 run over the minute and a half, capped off by a Jonathan Amos dunk, cutting the deficit to 21. However, that would be as close as they would come the rest of the game, with Eastern building the lead to as much as 27 at one point on a Lewis three-pointer. Lewis finished with six points and a game-high seven rebounds.
The Eagles will be in action again on Saturday, Jan. 26, as they travel to Oxford, Ohio for an afternoon tilt with the RedHawks. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. inside Millett Hall.
