CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team rolled past Appalachian State University, 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 30-25), Saturday morning at the Comfort Suites Charlotte Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Seniors Abby Reenders and Becky Reenders paced the Eagle attack combining for 20 of the team’s 39 kills, as the team improved to 2-0 on the young season.
Becky Reenders turned in a double-double with 11 kills, 10 digs and three total blocks, while sister Abby recorded 20 digs, nine kills and three total blocks. Also contributing for the Green and White was senior Corey Calcamuggio and junior Jill Wolosiansky, who recorded seven and six kills, respectively. Senior setter Kate Sulewski also tallied 30 assists on the morning.
For ASU, Brittany Zahn was the lone Mountaineer to reach double-figures in kills with 12 kills, she also added 12 digs. Jordan Jesberg led Appalachian State with 16 digs.
In the opening frame the Eagles rushed off to a 13-5 advantage before the Mountaineers would battle back to knot the score at 18. Following an EMU timeout, head coach Kim Berrington’s crew would respond taking 12 of the next 19 points to claim the 30-25 decision.
Games two and three were much of the same with Eastern Michigan building a solid edge before Appalachian State would cut into the deficit. However, the hole was something the Mountaineers could not recover from falling 30-24 and 30-25.
The Eagles close out the invitational later this afternoon versus Presbyterian College. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m. ay Halton Arena in Charlotte, N.C.
