Men to send 12 and women one to Missouri for Mideast Regional

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University men’s outdoor track and field team will send 12 competitors and the women’s team one to the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship, May 25-26, 2007, at the Audrey J. Walton Track Stadium in Columbia, Mo. All athletes must meet regional qualifying standards to compete in the meet.

EMU men’s individual qualifiers include: Eric Alejandro (Pembroke Pines, Fla.-Flanagan) in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles; David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary’s), Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Ont., Canada-Nepean), Corey Nowitzke (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe), Josh Perrin (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) and Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase; Matt Pinter (Big Rapids, Mich.-Big Rapids), and David Adamek (Ridgeway, Ont.-Canada-Ridgeway Crystal Beach) in the shot put; Pinter in the discus; Roy Shavers (Flint, Mich.-Central) in the 200 and 400 meters; Adam Kring (Jeddoe, Mich.-Port Huron Northern) in the high jump, and the 4x400-meter relay team from a combination of six runners, Shavers, Donnie Young (Archbold, Ohio-Archbold), Fred and Nate Blackwell (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Central), and Darrin Trammell (Detroit, Mich.-Mackenzie), and Alejandro.

Nowitzke and Karanja also qualified in the 1500 meters but will not compete in that event while Adamek and Pinter both hit qualifying for the hammer throw but are also not competing in those events.

On the EMU women’s side, Janice Keppler (Medina, NY-Medina) set an EMU varsity record of 13-feet-1.5 inches in the pole vault to meet the regional qualifying mark.

The five athletes that qualified for the 3,000-meter steeplechase sets an EMU record for qualifiers in one event. Nowitzke won the 2006 NCAA Regional steeplechase crown and went on to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Championship. Nowitzke is fresh from leading the Eagles to the 2007 Mid-American Conference title, winning both the steeplechase and the 1500 meters and finishing second in the 5,000 meters to earn Co-Most Valuable Performer honors at the meet.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Young, Fred, Nate Blackwell and Shavers captured that race in the final competition of the MAC Championship to help the Eagles win the team title by one point.
