MIDLAND, Mich. — The No. 2 seed Eastern Michigan University softball team rolled to a 7-3 decision against No. 3 seed Bowling Green State University in second round action of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, here at Currie Stadium. Junior Lindsay Ritz hit her first career home run, a three-run shot to left field, while senior Lindsay Schmid added a home run.

Senior pitcher Aimee Woodrum (12-8) logged the complete game with six strikeouts. In the third inning, Woodrum struck out BGSU’s Jeanie Beca on a called strike three, to become just the second pitcher in the MAC this season to strikeout Beca.

Ritz recorded a career-high four RBI off two hits. Schmid connected on her second home run of the tournament and seventh of the season.  Freshman Jenny Scherer went 2-for-4 at the plate, scored two runs, registered an RBI and a triple. Junior Heather Giroux posted a 2-for-3 game at the plate.

Senior Lauren Clark opened the game with a double down the right field line. After a strikeout, junior Ashley Strauss flew out to center field and the umpire called that Clark left too early on a tag-up attempt, ending the inning. Beca opened the Falcon’s half of the inning with a single to left field. A one-out walk put two runners at first and second, but Woodrum got out of the inning with a pop out and a groundout on an amazing diving catch by Ritz.

In the second frame, Scherer reached on an error and sophomore Heather Han walked, to put two one with one out. Ritz connected on a three-run shot for the first runs of the contest.

Schmid opened the fourth inning with a home run to left field. Singles by Scherer and junior Jessica Grant pitted runners at the corners with one out. An RBI single by Ritz scored Scherer. Giroux reached on an infield single but a Falcon throwing error allowed Grant to score, extending the Eagles lead to 6-0.

BGSU got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth after a two-run home run by Hayley Wiemer followed by a home run by Allison Vallas, cutting the Eastern advantage to 6-3.

The Eagles scored an insurance run in the sixth off a single by junior Stephanie Sabo and an RBI triple by Scherer, to give EMU the 7-3 victory.

The Eagles advance to the semi-final round of the tournament for the second consecutive season and take the field at 7:30 p.m. May 11, against the winner of the Ohio-Kent State game, set for Friday, at 1:30 p.m. In round one action, EMU picked up an 8-3 decision over Ohio University.
