Sandy Wagner named MAC Coach of the Year; Catherine Fortin and Stephany Fleet earn First Team All-MAC

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Fresh off a school’s best finish with a runner-up showing at the 2007 Mid-American Conference Women’s Golf Championship, Eastern Michigan University picked a trio of postseason awards to cap a stellar 2006-07 campaign. Second-year head coach Sandy Wagner was selected the MAC Coach of the Year while junior Catherine Fortin was named to the all-tournament team and first team All-MAC squad. Sophomore Stephany Fleet also garnered first team All-MAC accolades for her efforts.

Besides guiding the Green and White to a record-setting performance at the MAC Championships, Wagner helped propel the Eagles to three regular season championships during the 2006-07 campaign. The victories were Eastern’s fourth titles during her two year tenure and eighth overall in the program’s 10-year history.

Fortin played in all 11 tournaments this year, posting an average of 76.03 strokes in 30 rounds. The mark led the team and ranked fourth in the conference. She finished in the top 20 in all 11 events, including placing in the top three five different times. Fortin claimed medalist honors at the Baja Invitational (Feb. 13) firing a three-round score of 230 (76-74-80). She also fired a two-round score of 152 (75-77) to lead the Eagles to the title at the EKU Spring Invitational (April 6-7). For her efforts, the Beauceville, Canada native was twice named MAC Golfer of the Week.

In 30 rounds, Fleet averaged 77.3 strokes per round, good for eighth best in the MAC during this season. The Dewitt, Mich. native finished in the top 20 in nine events, including placing in the top five four different times. She claimed medalist honors at the Saluki Invitational (March 26) by firing a 36-hole total 145 (72-73), leading the Eagles to victory. With her victory she became just the ninth Eagle in school history to claim medalist honors. Fleet twice collected MAC Golfer of the Week accolades along with earning the MAC's Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending Oct. 1.
