Fischer tallies career-high 14 strikeouts in game one

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team split a doubleheader, 2-1 and 8-1, against the University at Buffalo in Mid-American Conference action here Saturday afternoon at Amherst Audubon Field.

Game one turned out to be a solid pitcher’s duel between EMU (7-12, 5-1 MAC) junior Jeff Fischer (1-3) and Buffalo (2-19, 1-5 MAC) senior Mike Radanovic. Fischer notched a career-high 14 strikeouts in a no decision allowing only one unearned run on eight scattered hits in 9.0 innings of work. Radanovic also went 9.0 innings allowing only one run on three scattered hits with three strikeouts in the no decision outing.

The game went into extra innings tied at 1-1 and ended on a down note for EMU. Top EMU closer Matt Shoemaker (0-2) took over for Fischer on the mound in the bottom the 10th inning and held Buffalo scoreless until the 12th inning. In the frame, Buffalo’s Chris Ciesla led off with a single to right field and was moved over to second base by a sacrifice bunt. The next batter was intentionally walked and UB’s Tony Fuller was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch was committed against to next batter which allowed Ciesla to score giving Buffalo a 2-1 victory.

Junior Jeff Davis led the Eagles going 1-for-4 with a RBI double which drove in EMU’s only run of the game in the third inning.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Buffalo’s Mike Folli singled and later advanced to third on a throwing error by Fisher. Brad Agustin then drove in Folli with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.

In game two, EMU fell behind 1-0 in the first inning when the bats came alive scoring eight unanswered runs on 11 hits to salvage the series with an 8-1 victory.

Senior Brain Blackburn led EMU going 2-for-5 at the plate with a triple and a game-high four RBI. Junior Steve Bradshaw also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while junior Josh Ivan hit 2-for3 with a RBI and run scored.

Eastern tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning as Ivan doubled to right field to score Bradshaw.

The Eagles broke the game open in the next frame with five runs on five hits highlighted by a lead-off triple by Davis and a two RBI single by Blackburn.

EMU added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two RBI triple by Blackburn.

EMU will begin a three-game series with Miami University on Friday, April 6 at 6 p.m.
