EMU-UIC box score
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Fueled by clutch hitting, the Eastern Michigan University softball team defeated the University of Illinois-Chicago 8-5, during the championship game at the Indiana University Classic, Sunday afternoon, here at the IU Softball Field. EMU belted a season-high 15 hits, including a bases loaded two-run single in the seventh inning by junior Heather Giroux to secure the victory. Every Eagle starter registered at least one hit.
Sophomore Heather Han blasted a three run home run, her first of the season. Freshman Jenny Scherer went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, the second three-hit game of her Green and White career. Senior Lindsay Schmid also had three hits in the contest. Senior Lauren Clark and Giroux each posted two hits.
Senior Aimee Woodrum threw the first three and 1/3 innings before senior Michelle Lloyd (2-5) came in from the bullpen. Lloyd threw the final three and 2/3 innings, picking up the win.
The Eagles posted the first runs of the game in the top of the third inning. Three singles by Clark, junior Stephanie Sabo and Schmid loaded the bases for Scherer with two down. Scherer blasted a two-run single to center field to give EMU a 2-0 lead.
The Flames put up four runs on the scoreboard after a five hit inning, including three doubles to put UIC up 4-2 in the fourth.
EMU regained the lead after Han’s three run shot in the fifth, taking advantage of back-to-back singles by junior Ashley Strauss and Schmid, 5-4. UIC knotted it back up at 5-5 in the bottom of the frame after a throwing error allowed a Flame runner to score.
In the seventh back-to-back one-out singles by Schmid and Scherer and a walk to Han loaded the bases. Junior Jessica Grant lined the ball off the shortstop’s glove allowing all runners to advance on the infield single. The bases remained loaded for Giroux who’s two-run single put the Eagles up three, 8-5.
Lloyd retired the final six Flame batters in a row, including striking out the final batter to secure the victory.
The EMU softball team (7-14) will kick-off Mid-American Conference season Friday, March 30 with a doubleheader with Northern Illinois. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Mary M. Bell Field.
