EMU TRAVELS TO SALUKI INVITE: The Eastern Michigan University women’s golf team will travel to the 13th-annual Saluki Invitational tournament Sunday and Monday, Mar. 25-26, at Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale, Ill.
This year’s Saluki Invitational features eight Missouri Valley Conference teams including host Southern Illinois, Creighton, Illinois State, Northern Iowa, Bradley, Drake, Evansville and Indiana State. Other teams competing in this year’s Saluki Invitational are Austin Peay, Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, Rend Lake and Murray State.
Hickory Ridge Public Golf Course is owned by the Carbondale Park District and serves as the home of Saluki women’s golf. The course plays 6,065 yards with a par of 72.
Play begins Sunday with a 10 a.m. and continues on Monday at 9 a.m. Both days will begin with shot gun starts.
Fortin Ties for Third at Rio Verde Invite: Junior Catherine Fortin continued her strong play with a fourth consecutive top-10 showing, turning in a tie for third place at the Rio Verde Invitational at the Quail Run Golf Course, March 9-11. Competing against some of the region’s best golfers, the Beauceville, Canada native carded a 73 in the final round to finish with a 220.
As a team, the Eagles placed eighth with a team score of 915 (303-308-304) as Baylor University took home the invitational hardware with an 886 (289-300-297). The Bears made it a double victory as Allison Martin captured medalist honors with a four-under 212 (69-72-71).
Sophomore Stephany Fleet gave the Eagles another player among the top 25, after carding a 74 to finish tied for 21st with a 228 (76-78-74). Redshirt freshman Marjorie Thout and junior followed Paola Sanchez with a 239 while sophomore Courtney Aili turned in a 243 (76-82-85) for 83rd. Senior Kelly Boogaard rounded out the lineup with a 246 (77-82-87) for 90th place.
Women’s Golf Places Fifth at Red Rocks Invitational: The Eagles fired its best round of the spring season with its final-round 313 to finish in fifth place with a two-round total of 627 (314-313) at the 16-team Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz. Junior Catherine Fortin earned her sixth top-20 finish of the season and second top-10 showing of the spring by tying for 10 place with a 36-hole score of 152. Fortin, a native of Beauceville, Canada, closed the tournament with a three-over-par 75 in the second round on the par-72, 6,114-yard layout of the Oakcreek Country Club course. Fortin finish four strokes off the pace set by co-champions Liliana Alvarez of Northwestern and Diana Hong of Washington State, who both finished with two-round totals of 147.
Northwestern held off a strong final charge from the Cougars on Sunday. WSU produced the best round of the tournament with a 292 to shave 10 strokes off the Wildcats’ lead heading into Sunday’s competition, but Northwestern managed a 302 on Sunday to win the tournament by one stroke at 601. WSU finished second at 602, while Michigan took third at 609.
Sophomore Stephany Fleet carded her fifth top-20 showing of the year, finished in a tie for 20th with a 155 (76-79). Sophomore Courtney Aili also recorded a solid showing in a tie for 35th place by cutting four-stokes off her first round to end Sunday with a total of 160 (82-80). Redshirt freshman Marjorie Thuot and senior Kelly Boogaard rounded out the EMU lineup with a 161 (80-81) and a 164 (84-80), respectively. Playing as an individual, junior Paola Sanchez recorded rounds of 84 and 79 to finish 48th.
Catherine Fortin Ties for the Title at the Baja Invitational: Junior Catherine Fortin fired a 14-over-par 230 (76-74-80) to finish tied atop the leader board with the University of Toledo’s Tammy Clelland here at the Baja Invitational at the Baja Golf Resorts, Feb. 12-13. Fortin’s finish marked her second-career victory and sixth career top five showing.
As a team, the Eagles finished second with a team score of 972 (326-316-330) as the Rockets ran away with the tournament title carding a 947 (315-321-311). Thanks to Clelland and teammates Boram Lee and Natalie Storck, who finished third and tied for fourth, respectively, Toledo won the team title by a margin of 25 strokes.
Individually for Eastern Michigan, sophomore Stephany Fleet followed with a 241 (82-80-79), while senior Kelly Boogaard added a 253 (83-82-88). Sophomore Courtney Aili and freshman Marjorie Thuot rounded out the lineup with a 256 (85-80-91) and a 257 (80-88-89), respectively.
Eagles Conclude Strong Fall Campaign with Fifth Place Finish at the Shootout at the Legends: The EMU women’s golf team capped off a successful fall season with a fifth place showing at the Shootout at the Legends at the par-72, 6,073-yard Legend Golf Course. Junior Catherine Fortin led the way for the Eagles, firing an even-par 216 (75-73-68) to finish tied for second place. The runner-up showing was Fortin’s best finish of the fall and marked her fifth career top five finish and 16th career top 20 showing.
Fortin’s third-round 68 is the lowest of any EMU golfer this season and is one stroke shy of her career-low 67 set last year at the Rocket Fall Classic, Sept. 10, 2005, at Heather Downs Country Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Senior Katie Strawser followed with a 224 (75-72-77) for a 13th place showing, while sophomore Stephany Fleet added a 227 (75-77-75) for a 26th place. Sophomore Courtney Aili fired a career-best round of 72 to finish with a 229 (77-80-72) in 35th place and freshman Marjorie Thuot rounded out the lineup with a 236 (76-80-80).
As a team, the Eagles finished fifth with a school-record score of 895 (301-302-292) as Campbell University ran away with the tournament title carding a 877 (300-287-290).
The 895 breaks the previous low set just last season by the Eagles as the Rocket Spring Classic, April 17-18, the Dornoch Golf Club. EMU’s third round 292 is also a school-record for the lowest single round, breaking the previous mark of 295 set last year at the Rocket Fall Classic.
Fleet Named GOW AGAIN: Stephany Fleet was named the Mid-American Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for the period ending Oct. 1. The award marks the second consecutive week that she has claimed the weekly league accolade.

Competing against some of the region’s best golfers, the Dewitt, Mich. native carded a 73 in the final round to finish with a 223, just one stroke out of a playoff for the tournament title.
Fleet Named MAC Scholar Athlete: EMU sophomore Stephany Fleet was named Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 1, the conference office announced today. The weekly award is the first for Fleet who also was named MAC Female Golfer of the Week.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives.

Fleet Claims Third at Wolverine Invite: Stephany Fleet continued her strong play with a third consecutive top-five showing, turning in a third-place finish at the prestigious Wolverine Invitational here at the U-M Golf Course, Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Competing against some of the region’s best golfers, the Dewitt, Mich. native carded a 73 in the final round to finish with a 223, just one stroke out of a playoff for the tournament title.
As a team, the Eagles placed seventh with a team score of 935 (312-317-306) as the University of Michigan took home the invitational hardware with a 906 (305-295-06). The Wolverines made it a double victory as Brianna Broderick captured medalist honors with a nine-over 222 (70-77-75) by downing Ohio State’s Dana Je on the event’s third playoff hole.
Fleet had a solid two days, finishing just two strokes shy of her career best 54-hole score of 221 set just last week at the Lady Irish Invitational, Sept. 23-24, in South Bend. Ind. The three-round score was also the lowest total ever posted by an EMU golfer in the seven years that the Eagles have competed in the event. The previous low of 228 was set by Heather Nolan in a third-place showing, Oct. 14-15, 2005.
Overall, the third-place finish marked the sophomore’s fifth career-top 10 finish and sixth consecutive top 15 showing dating back to the EKU Spring Invitational, April 6-8, 2006.
Junior Catherine Fortin gave the Eagles another player among the top 25, after carding a 75 to finish tied for 15th with a 228 (76-77-75). Sophomore Courtney Aili followed with a 240 (82-80-80) for a 43rd place tie while junior Paola Sanchez turned in a 244 (82-84-78) for 49th. Redshirt freshman Marjorie Thout rounded out the lineup with a 247 (82-82-83) for 54th place.
Playing as an individual, senior Katie Strawser recorded rounds of 78, 84 and 78 to tie for 40th.
