BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Eastern Michigan University softball team picked up an 8-6 victory in a come-from-behind slugfest against Mid-American Conference foe the University at Buffalo and dropped a 7-1 decision to the University of Illinois-Chicago, during the second day of competition at the Indiana University Classic Saturday morning, here at the IU Softball Field. EMU will face host Indiana at 4 p.m. to conclude the Eagles’ third game today, the first time since the 2001 season EMU will play three games in one day.

Against UB, junior Ashley Strauss posted a 2-for-3 game with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Heather Han and junior Heather Giroux each had two RBI.

Senior Kelly Tomczak (2-1) picked-up the complete game victory, recording six strikeouts. After a rocky start in the beginning of the first inning, Tomczak retired 12 Bull batters in succession spanning from the first to fifth inning.

UB jumped out an early 3-0 advantage in the first off a three-run home run by Lacy Schneider.

EMU tied the game in the fourth at 3-3 after Buffalo had some problems in the field. Freshman Jenny Scherer and Han reached on back-to-back one-out infield errors. An infield single by junior Jessica Grant loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly to left field by junior Lindsay Ritz followed by a two-run double off the wall in right-center field by Giroux knotted the game.

UB regained the lead in the fifth after an RBI single to right field gave the Bulls a 4-3 lead.

The Eagles broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back one-out singles by Strauss and senior Lindsay Schmid followed by back-to-back doubles by Scherer and Han accounted for three runs. A sacrifice fly by Grant brought in the fourth run of the inning for EMU, putting the Green and White up 7-4.

The Bulls cut into the lead after adding a run in the bottom of the fifth, 7-5. EMU extended the lead back to three after a sacrifice fly by Strauss scored senior Lauren Clark. A solo home run by UB’s Collenn Greene in the seventh rounded out the scoring for the game.

Against the Flames, Clark led the Eagles with two hits and two stolen bases. Strauss knocked in EMU’s lone run.

Senior pitcher Michelle Lloyd (1-5) pitched the complete game

The Eagles wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Clark started the Eagles’ half of the first with a double to left field. A sacrifice bunt advanced Clark to third and she came home on a sacrifice fly by Strauss, 1-0. UIC tied the game in the second after an RBI double by Brooke Frydendall brought the score to 1-1.

The Flames posted another run in the third off a throwing error, 2-1. UIC extends its advantage to 5-1 in the fifth inning off a two-run double by Elizabeth Jacoby and an Eagle infield error. A solo home run by Stephanie Chavez in the sixth put the Flames up 6-1. The Flames added their final run in the seventh to close out the scoring.

The EMU softball team (5-14) earned the No. 3 seed and will play again later today, March 24, against No. 1 seed Indiana at 4 p.m.
