Eagles fall short in seventh inning come back bid

EMU-IU Box score

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite out-hitting Indiana University, the Eastern Michigan University softball team fell to the Hoosiers, 3-1, throughout a steady rain, during the opening day of action at the IU Classic Friday afternoon, here at the IU Softball Field. The Eagles failed to capitalize on several opportunities as they left 11 runners on base. EMU out hit the Hoosiers 8-6.

Three Eagles posted two hits in the contest. Senior Lauren Clark, junior Stephanie Sabo and freshman Jenny Scherer each posted a 2-for-4 game with a double.

Senior Aimee Woodrum (2-4) pitched the complete game for EMU, recording two strikeouts. Junior Ashley Strauss had her hit streak snapped at nine games, the longest for an Eagle since 2004. Junior Jessica Grant saw her hit streak ended at seven games.

Clark singled up the middle to start the seventh with EMU down 3-0. A two-out walk to senior Lindsay Schmid brought the tying run to the plate. Scherer connected on a double to left field, scoring a run and pitting runners at second and third. However, a grounder to the first baseman ended the Eagles’ come back bid and the game.

The Hoosiers got on the scoreboard first, Emily Bergeson led-off the second inning with a single to center field. Kim Richards followed with a towering home run that cleared the scoreboard in left field, giving IU an early 2-0 advantage.

The Eagles threatened in the fourth when Scherer led-off the inning with a single up the middle. Sophomore Heather Han walked and junior Heather Giroux singled to load the bases with two outs. Clark connected and the ball went off the pitcher’s glove and rolled toward the second baseman who fired the ball to first, just beating Clark to the base and ending the inning with IU still up 2-0.

EMU had another chance to plate runs in the fifth after Sabo doubled over the left fielder’s head to start the frame. A groundout advanced her to third and a walk to Schmid put runners at the corners with one out. However, a pop-up and a fielder’s choice would end the inning with both runners stranded.

The Hoosiers added an insurance run in the sixth after a solo home run by Jennilee Huddleston.

The EMU softball team (4-13) will continue participating in the IU Classic tomorrow, March 24. The Eagles scheduled game with Mid-American Conference foe the University at Buffalo has been pushed back to 10 a.m., March 24, and EMU will also play the University of Illinois-Chicago at noon due to heavy rain.
