Chanticleers drop the Eagles 12-3 and 10-7

Box scores: Game 1. Game 2.

CONWAY, S.C. - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a pair of games to the No. 15 ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Saturday afternoon at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. The Eagles fell to CCU 12-3 in Game 1 and then lost the second game, 10-7, as Coastal completed the series sweep. With the losses EMU falls to 2-11 on the year and the Chanticleers move to 19-3.

In the opener the Chanticleers jumped on the board in the first inning and pushed the advantage to 3-0 with a par of runs in the bottom of the third frame. Eastern was able to cut into the deficit in the top of the fifth as senior Patrick Dean homered to bring home redshirt freshman Todd Graves and cut the lead to 3-2. However, Coastal matched that with a two-run bomb of its own in the bottom half of the stanza to make it 5-2.

Moving ahead to the seventh, senior Brian Blackburn plated Dean on a sacrifice fly to pull within two, 5-3, but the Coastal would answer in a big way with seven runs over the next two innings to cruise to the 12-3 decision.

In the nightcap, the Green and White bats awoke in the opening innings to push across seven runs to take the early 7-1 edge. Freshman Aaron Crooks led off the game with a double before moving to third on a wild pitch. Crooks would score on a Dean single before Coastal dould get out of the jam. CCU would knot the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame on a walk and a double through the right side.

Blackburn doubled to open the second, and would then advance to third on an infield single off the bat of freshman Corey Chaffins. The Green and White loaded the bases on a walk to junior Mike Sacha. An infield single by senior Trumaine Riley scored Blackburn to make it 2-1. Crooks then cleared the bases with his second double of the day to push the margin to 5-1. Eastern continued apply pressure by put runners on first and third on a single by Dean. Senior Derek Lehrman then drove in Crooks with a single to right. Following a pitching change, Blackburn singled to score Dean and make it 7-1.

But as they had shown in the first game, Coastal Carolina could score in bunches and those runs came full force starting in the fourth inning. CCU plated six runs in the fourth, two more in the sixth and a single run in the eighth en route to pasting 10 total runs on the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, the EMU bats went silent for the remainder on the contest thanks en part to solid relief pitching by Kent Altman. Atman pitched 6.2 innings of relief, striking out five and allowing four hits.

Eastern Michigan returns north to open a Mid-American Conference play Friday, March 21, versus Bowling Green State University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Stellar Field in Bowling Green, Ohio
