Eagles return seven starters for 2007 season
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Eastern Michigan University softball team was picked to finished third in the Mid-American Conference’s West Division, the league announced Tuesday, in a preseason poll voted on by the league’s head coaches. Western Michigan was selected to repeat as West Division champions and are the preseason favorites to win the 2007 MAC softball championship this season.
The Broncos received five votes to win the post season tournament. Central Michigan was picked to finish second in the West. EMU, with one vote to win the tournament, was third followed by Northern Illinois (one tournament vote), Ball State and Toledo.
Kent State was tabbed as the preseason favorite in the East Division with four votes to win the tournament. Bowling Green was selected for second place. Rounding out the East Division were Akron, Ohio, Miami and Buffalo.
EMU’s softball team, in its fifth year under Head Coach Karen Baird, posted a 28-28 overall mark in 2006 and finished the MAC regular season 14-8. EMU advanced to the semi-finals of the MAC Tournament. The 28 wins, 14 league victories and two MAC Tournament wins were all the program’s most since the 1999 season.
The Eagles return 13 letterwinners and seven starters from last year’s squad, including the 2006 MAC Player of the Year Lauren Clark. EMU will begin the 2007 campaign playing in the University of South Florida Tournament in Tampa, Fla. The Green and White will open with UAB Friday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. followed by a 3 p.m. game with host USF, who is ranked No. 23 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Preseason Poll.
