Softball Wins 1-0 Pitcher's Duel

TAMPA, Fla. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team rode great pitching to a 1-0 decision over Drake University, during the consolation game in the University of South Florida “The Game” Tournament, here Sunday morning at the USF Softball Field. Senior Kelly Tomczak threw two-hit complete game shutout. Senior Lauren Clark’s RBI single in the seventh inning was the difference.
The game was a classic pitcher’s duel with Tomczak retiring 14 if the first 15 batters she faced. Se allowed just two hits in the complete game shutout. She struck out two batters.
Junior Ashley Strauss reached base in all four plate apperances, going 3-for-3 with a walk.
An infield error followed by a single to leftfield by Strauss put two on for the Eagles in the fifth. Runners advanced to second and third with one out after an illegal pitch, but the Eagles could not plate a run, keeping the score deadlocked at 0-0.
Junior Jessica Grant led off the final inning with a walk. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third after a single up the middle by Strauss. Clark single through the left side of the infield, scoring Grant and breaking the tie, 1-0.
In the bottom of the seventh the Bulldogs led off the inning with a single up the middle. A fielder’s choice recorded the first out of the inning leaving a runner at first. An infield ground out advanced the runner to second. A groundout to third would end the game.
The Eagles fell to Drake, 7-6, yesterday (Feb. 23) in a come-from-behind bid that fell just short. The Bulldogs led 7-0 in the fifth when EMU rallied for a six run inning but could not manage another run falling, 7-6.
The Eagles (1-4) will continue its tour of the state of Florida traveling to Gainesville tomorrow, Feb. 26, for a doubleheader with the University of Florida. The first game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at the UF Softball Stadium.
