PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Temple University guard Mark Tyndale hit an off-balance three-point field goal from the top of the three-point arc to give the Owls a 58-55 non-conference win over a visiting Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team here Saturday afternoon at the Liacouras Center.
EMU junior point guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) set up the thrilling finish with a driving lay-up with :13.2 left to tie the game at 55-55. Temple then hustled the ball up court with Tyndale connecting on the triple. The Eagles long in-bounds pass was intercepted, giving the Owls the three-point victory.
Medlock led the Eagles, now 4-5 on the year, with 19 points while senior guard Jesse Bunkley (Detroit, Mich.-CMA-Mott C.C.) added 15. Senior Travis Lewis (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Loy Norrix) also notched 10 rebounds to led the Green and White. Temple, now 6-5, was paced by Dionte Christmas with 22 while Tyndale added 10.
The Eagles started the game with two free throws from junior guard Wendale Farrow (Sacramento, Calif.-Mira Loma-American River C.C.) for a 2-0 lead and the two teams traded baskets through the first nine minutes, with the score deadlocked at nine-all at the 11:14 mark.
The Owls then came back with an 11-4 run, to take an eight-point lead, 21-13, with 7:48 left in the half. The Eagles then fought back to gain a 21-21 tie at the 6:03 mark on two straight three-point field goals, by Jarred Axon (Jackson, Mich.-Jackson-Schoolcraft C.C.) and Bunkley, followed by a four-foot jumper from James Matthews (Detroit, Mich.-Denby), seeing his first action of the season.
The Eagles would then boost their lead to as many as four, 27-23, with just over a minute left in the half and would hold on for a 27-25 halftime lead.
Temple’s Christmas led all scorers in the first half with 13 while Medlock and Bunkley checked in with eight each. The Eagles won the first-half battle of the boards, 13-11.
The second half started with a flurry as Temple came back in the first three minutes to forge a two-point lead, 31-29. The Eagles were not to be denied, however, recording two straight triples, from Bunkley and Medlock, for a 35-31 Eagle advantage.
Eastern managed to keep its lead over the next 10 minutes and Farrow’s lay-up with 8:01 remaining gave the Eagles a two-point lead, 46-44. Temple then went to the long-range attack and back-to-back threes by Mark Tyndale and Christmas and a lay-up by Tyndale, gave the Owls a six-point cushion, 52-46.
Axon then responded with a three-point goal of his own to cut the home team’s lead to three, 52-49, with 4:46 left. The game seesawed the rest of the way as both teams traded big buckets to set up the thrilling finish.
