Women’s Golf Tied for the Lead at the Shootout at the Legends

The Eagles fired a school-record 290 in the first round followed up with a 305

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Behind a school-record 290 in the first round, the Eastern Michigan University women’s golf team is tied for first place with the University of Illinois after the first day of the Shootout at the Legends. The Eagles and the Illini finished the day at 595, six strokes ahead of third place Grand Valley here at the par 72, 6,356 yard Legends of Indiana Golf Course.

The Green and White continue to prove that records are made to be broken, as today’s 290 marked the fourth time in three years that a new 18 hole standard has been set. The first round total broke the previous low of 292 set just last season also at the Shootout at the Legends, Oct. 9-10, 2006. During the tournament’s final round EMU recorded rounds of 68, 72, 75 and 77 to break the then-record of 295 en route to a second place finish.

Senior Catherine Fortin (Beauceville, Canada-Polyvalente St. Francois) fired a two-under 142 (71-71) to reside in second place behind UI’s Seul Ki Park who finished the day with a 139 (66-73). The other Eagle in the top 10 is junior Courtney Aili (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea), who carded rounds of 73 and 77 to finish with a 150 and in a tie for seventh place.

Junior Stephany Fleet (Dewitt. Mich.-Dewitt) is tied for 12th place with a 151 (73-78) and freshman Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) is currently 18th after the first day with a 152 (73-79). Sophomore Marjorie Thuot (Joliette, Ouebec-Therese-Martin) and senior Paola Sanchez (Bogata, Colombia-Cedar Springs (Mich.) rounded out the lineup with a 175 (78-79) and a 160 (80-80), respectively.

The Shootout at the Legends concludes with a final 18 holes Tuesday beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
