CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the West Division according to the 2007 Mid American Conference preseason poll by the voting members of the MAC News Media Association. The announcement was made in Cleveland today as part of the conference’s women’s basketball Media Day at Quicken Loans Arena.

First-year head coach AnnMarie Gilbert inherits a squad that returns 10 letterwinners from last year’s team that finished second in the division with a 10-6 mark. In 2006-07 Eastern Michigan advanced to the semifinals of the Kraft MAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. Bowling Green is the only conference member to boast that accomplishment over the same span.

Ball State University was picked to win the West Division with 240 points including 36 first-place votes. Northern Illinois University is expected to finish second with 184 points and EMU third with 150 points. Rounding out the West Division were Western Michigan University (122 points), the University of Toledo (106), and Central Michigan University (59). Ohio University was tabbed as the preseason favorite in the East with 210 points.

Ball State also was selected to win the 2008 MAC Women’s Basketball Tournament, which takes place at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena, March 9 to March 15, earning 22 votes. Bowling Green garnered six votes to repeat as tournament champions, while Miami and Ohio picked up two votes to cut down the nets. Western Michigan, Buffalo and Northern Illinois also earned a vote to earn the league’s automatic NCAA berth.

Eastern returns two starters to this season’s lineup with sophomore guard Alyssa Pittman, a 2007 Preseason All-MAC pick and junior guard Kendra Gallert. Seniors Colleen Russell, Brittany Tyson and Kivilcim Yamanoglu will be joined by four newcomers to the Eagles’ lineup this season.

In just 13 days the EMU men’s and women’s basketball teams take to the court for the first exhibition games of the 2007-08 campaign. The women’s team plays host to the OGBR Legends, Oct. 31, at 6 p.m. prior to the men’s team taking to the court at 8 p.m. versus Northwood University. Prior to the Oct. 31 doubleheader fans can catch the first glimpse of both teams at the Green & White game, Oct. 27, immediately following the football game versus Western Michigan University.
