CLEVELAND, Ohio
-- Eastern Michigan University sophomore Jeff Fischer (Farmington, Mich.-Farmington) collected the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year award for his 2006 regular season performances, the conference office announced Tuesday night in a vote by the league’s head coaches prior to the start of the 2006 MAC Baseball championships.

Fischer enjoyed a record-setting season in 2006 en route to being named first-team All-MAC. The Farmington, Mich. native posted a 9-3 record on the mound, the most wins for an EMU pitcher since 2004. Fischer finished fifth in the league in strikeouts (98), while recording four complete games. The sophomore right-hander limited opposing hitters to a .223 batting average and finished first in the league with a 1.95 ERA. In MAC games only, he posted a 6-1 record, including three complete games. Fisher limited opposing league batters to just a .204 average, while posting a league leading ERA of 1.88.

Fischer was named MAC West Pitcher of the Week twice this season. He joins former EMU standout Doug Martin and Ryan Ford as the only other players in school history to earn the MAC Pitcher of the Year honors. Martin garnered the accolade in 1991, while Ford picked up the hardware following the 2004 season.

Other awards from Tuesday included regular season MAC champion Kent State placing six members on the All-MAC First Team squad, including five position players. West Division champion Central Michigan had the second-most selections across the two teams with four.

Kent State’s Emmanuel Burriss was named the MAC Player of the Year, Scott Stricklin was recognized as the Coach of the Year and Western Michigan’s Ethan Hollingsworth was named Freshman of the Year.

No. 6 EMU will take on either No. 2 seeded Central Michigan or No. 5 seed Miami in the tournament's first elimination game Thursday, May 25, at Schoonover Stadium in Kent, Ohio. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
