Softball Falls to #1 Seed WMU, 5-2

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a 5-2 decision to Western Michigan University in second round action of the Mid-American Conference Tournament here Thursday night at Currie Stadium. The Eagles will face Northern Illinois Friday, May 12, at 1:30 p.m. in a third round elimination game.
Bronco ace Krysten Shumaker allowed just two hits, while tying a career-high with 15 strikeouts. Earlier she threw a 12 strikeout, complete-game extra innings shutout to help WMU defeat Ohio, 1-0. Shumaker is 18-5 on the season.
Junior Lauren Clark made two outstanding over-the-shoulder catches in the field and had the Eagles’ lone hit heading into the final frame. Lindsay Schmid put the Eagles on the board in the seventh with a two-run home run to center field, her fifth of the season.
Senior Nikki Denman lasted just an inning and a third allowing four runs. Junior Aimee Woodrum came from the bullpen and threw the final five and 2/3 innings. Woodrum gave up a run in the seventh, ending her consecutive scoreless streak at 34 innings.
WMU got on the board first in the second with a five-hit inning leading to four runs. Three of the Bronco hits in the inning were doubles.
The Broncos added an insurance run in the seventh, a solo home run to left field to make the score 5-0.
EMU plated its two runs in the seventh off Schmid’s two-run homer.
The Eagles continue play in the MAC Tournament May 12, with a 1:30 p.m. contest with Northern Illinois. NIU fell to Kent State 2-1, and defeated Akron 3-2 in the first two rounds of the league post-season tournament.
