Eagles drop game one 5-1 and take game two 3-2
KENT, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split a double header against Kent State University here today at Kent State Field. The Eagles dropped game one 5-1, and took the nightcap 3-2.
EMU moves to 16-19 overall, and 4-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Golden Flashes are now 12-18 and 2-3 in league action.
For the third straight game the Eagles offense was limited to just two hits as KSU’s Brittney Robinson improves to 11-9 on the season. Earlier this week, EMU posted back-to-back two-hit outings against Notre Dame.
Senior designated player Nikki Denman (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Southview) hit her first home run of the season to account for the Eagles’ lone run. The homer is the 15th of her career and gives her sole possession of third place on the EMU career home run list. Teammate junior Lauren Clark (Flat Rock, Mich.-New Boston Huron) has hit 14 career long balls.
The Golden Flashes scored four runs in the first inning highlighted by a two-run home run. KSU added another run in the third off another homer. EMU scored its only run in the seventh off Denman’s round tripper.
In the nightcap, three Eagles had multi-hit performances with Clark, junior outfielder Lindsay Schmid (Madison, Ohio-Madison) and sophomore outfielder Stephanie Sabo (Allen Park, Mich.-Cabrini) all cranking out two hits.
Junior outfielder Kayla Bluhardt (North Branch, Mich.-North Branch) hit her first career home run.
Junior pitcher Aimee Woodrum (Cincinnati, Ohio-Sycamore) went five innings allowing one earned run, while picking up the win. Denman pitched the final two innings picking up her third save of the season.
Schmid’s RBI single in the first inning gave EMU a 1-0 advantage until the sixth when Bluhardt’s blast put the Eagles up 2-0. KSU cut into the lead after a solo home run made the score 2-1. A single by senior catcher Katie Grens (Elgin, Ill.-Elgin) gave EMU a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Kent State scored a run and had the tying run at third but failed to bring it in as the Eagles took the game 3-2.
The Eagles are in action again Saturday, April 8, when they travel to Buffalo for a seven inning MAC game. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
