Eagles drop game one to Miami 2-0, but take game two, 6-0
Box scores: Game one, Game two
YPSILANTI, Mich. – In two completely different types of games, the Eastern Michigan University softball team spilt a doubleheader with Mid-American Conference opponent Miami University. The RedHawks took game one, 2-0, limiting the Eagles to just two hits, while EMU took the nightcap 6-0, belting out 13 hits and had a complete game shutout performance by junior Michelle Lloyd (Akron, Ohio-Archbishop Hoban).
In game one, the Eagle offense was limited to two hits and a two-run sixth inning was all Miami needed for the victory.
Miami’s Courtney Salmon had a no-hitter working into the sixth inning when junior Kelly Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) singled to centerfield. Senior Katie Grens (Elgin, Ill.-Elgin) had the Eagles’ only other hit in the contest.
EMU senior Nikki Denman (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Southview) pitched 5 and 1/3 innings in the loss. Junior Aimee Woodrum (Cincinnati, Ohio-Sycamore) threw the final inning and 2/3. The RedHawk’s received one hit from each of their nine batters.
The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when the MU’s Leslie Macedo hit a solo home run to leftfield followed by back-to-back doubles to account for the games two runs.
The Eagles had opportunities starting in the fourth when Salmon hit back-to-back Eagle batters but EMU failed to capitalize. In the sixth, after Eastern’s first hit of the contest, Gulliver was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on a ground out. With two outs and a runner at third, Miami decided to intentionally walk junior Lauren Clark (Flat Rock, Mich.-New Boston Huron), who currently leads the MAC in home runs. The strategy worked to perfection as Salmon struck out the next Eagle batter to end the inning.
In the nightcap, the Eagles’ bats came to life as EMU totaled 13 hits.
Lloyd threw a complete game shutout allowing seven hits, while striking out seven batters. The complete game shutout is the fourth of her career.
Three Eagles had multi-hit performances with Clark leading the way going 2-for-4 with two doubles, while knocking in three runs. Denman and sophomore Lindsay Ritz (Garden City, Mich.-Garden City) each had two hits for the Green and White.
An RBI double to right centerfield by Clark plated the first run of the game in the first inning. Clark would score on an infield single by junior Lindsay Schmid (Madison, Ohio-Madison) giving EMU an early 2-0 lead.
Eastern’s third run would score after an RBI single by Grens in the third. The Eagles scored three runs in the fourth inning with two runners scoring off a double by Clark. An RBI single by Denman would account for the game’s final run.
The Eagles (21-24; 9-7 MAC) will be in action again Saturday, April 29, for the first of a two-game weekend series with MAC foe Ball State. Game time for the Saturday and Sunday games are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
