Eagles Defeat Ball State in MAC Action
YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University softball team defeated Ball State University, 3-1, in the first of a two-game weekend series here Saturday at Varsity Field. A two-run home run by senior Katie Grens (Elgin, Ill.-Elgin) capped an Eagle come-from-behind victory.
With the win EMU improves to 22-24 and 10-7 in league play, while the Cardinals dropped their seventh straight contest to fall to 12-26 and a 5-12 mark in MAC play.
Senior Nikki Denman (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Southview) allowed one run off five hits, while striking out six batters in a complete game effort. Denman improves to 9-7 on the season.
Grens knocked in all three of EMU’s runs while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Junior shortstop Lauren Clark (Flat Rock, Mich.-New Boston Huron) was a perfect 3-for-3 and scored two runs.
A walk with the bases loaded account for the Cardinals lone run which came in the second inning. EMU took the lead in the fourth after Grens’ two-run blast and an RBI single by Grens in the sixth account for all three Eagle runs.
EMU will be in action again Sunday, April 30, for the final contest of a two-game weekend series with Ball State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
