Eagles’ Conclude Regular Season With League Wins

Complete Results.

YPSILANTI, Mich.--The Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams ended the regular season in style with a sweep over the University at Buffalo Saturday, Feb. 4, in Jones Natatorium. The men won 123-71 while the women were victorious 125-103.

For the men, the Mid-American Conference win increases the team’s total to 43 straight league dual meet victories, dating back to the 1998-99 season. The Eagles conclude the season with a 7-2 mark and a 4-0 conference record. The 2005-06 season marks the eighth consecutive year that EMU has posted an undefeated league record. With the loss, the Bulls fall to 2-5 and 0-4 in conference action.

After a 139-93 setback last night (Feb. 3) to the No. 18 Ohio State, the men’s team showed their enormous amount of depth and skill by posting the top three finishers in four of the first five events and finishing first and second in the other.

The Eagles had seven different individual winners. Dan Wohl (1000 freestyle), Jason Piercey (200 freestyle), Andy Gantzer (50 freestyle), Kevin Joyce (200 IM), Ryan Fulkerson (200 butterfly), Derrick Roe (100 freestyle), Mark Kurtzer (200 backstroke) and the 400-yard medley relay team of Andrzej Olesinski, Don Ellison, Preston Revere and Piercey combined to win eight of the meets first nine events to give EMU an insurmountable lead.

For the women, EMU won the first eight events to help tame the Bulls and finished one-two in seven of those races. With the win, the Eagles finish the year 9-1 and 6-1 in MAC action. The 9-1 mark is the second best overall record in school history to the 2000-01 season when they finished 10-1.

Claire Letendre and Catherine Lee Ha each were double event winners. Letendre claimed the 1000-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly, while Lee Ha won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races. Alissa Ricard (200 freestyle), Madeleine Pilchard (200 IM) and Jamielea Strating (3-meter diving) each won individual events.

Both team’s will be in action again to compete in the MAC Championships. The men’s championship will take place at Ohio University, March, 2-4, while the women’s championship is at Akron University February 23-25.
