Eagles Lead the Way After First Day

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Eastern Michigan University men’s swimming and diving team found itself in familiar territory after day one of the 2006 Mid-American Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships held in Ohio University’s Aquatic Center. The Eagles lead the field with 283 points after the first day of competition. EMU has won the championship the past seven years.

In the first event, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Preston Revere, Mike Rowland, Andy Gantzer and Kevin Joyce combined to take first place. The relay team finished with a 1:21.91 time.  
 
The Eagles showed their depth in the 500-yard freestyle race with EMU placing four swimmers in the top seven. Junior Jason Piercey, who won the event as both a freshman and sophomore, finished in second place this year with a 4:28.71 time. Steve Bowling finished fourth with a 4:32.17 mark with Steven Hill finishing right behind in fifth with a 4:34.00 time. Eric Stanczyk took seventh in 4:35.02.
 
In event three, junior Dan Wohl became a three-time MAC Champion in the 200-yard IM and won his seventh individual league title. Wohl will be defending his two-time MAC Championship in the 400-yard IM on Day two, March 3. He is also a two-time champion in the 200-yard butterfly which races on the final day of competition, March 4. Wohl is a two-time winner of the MAC Swimmer of the Year award.
 
Andrew Ciesielski and Donald Ellison finished third and fourth in the 200-yard Im with times of 1:53.81 and 1:54.71 respectively.
 
Joyce and Revere tied for second in the 50-yard freestyle just .02 seconds behind first place. They finished with a 20.64 time. Rowland finished sixth with a 20.97 time, while Gantzer took eighth in 21.31.
 
On the 1-meter board, Josh Olson took second with a score of 308.65 and Matt Guinen finished in seventh with 271.60 points.
 
The 400-yard medley relay team of Andrzej Olesinski, Joyce, Ryan Fulkerson, and Wohl finished in second place with a 3:23.77 time.
 
EMU returns to action tomorrow during day two of the 2006 MAC Championships. Preliminary swimming heats begin at 12 p.m. followed by the preliminary rounds of the 3-meter diving event scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Events for day two are 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 3-meter diving and 800-yard freestyle relay.
