Gymnastics Upends Northern Illinois

Freshman Zu Voung claims all-around title with a total of 38.475

YPSILANTI, Mich.-- The Eastern Michigan University women’s gymnastics team defeated Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois University, 192.450-191.750, at Warner Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. Freshman Zu Voung, competing in her first collegiate all-around, won the title with a total of 38.475 besting teammate Rebecca Fuss' mark 38.375.
With the win the Eagles start improved to 3-5 (3-1 MAC), while the Huskies fall to 2-5 (2-3 MAC).
The Green and White grabbed an early lead after the first event, vault. Sophomore Tawna Bennett took home first place honors with a 9.825 as freshman Monica Lucas tied for second with a 9.750. Bennett's 9.825 was the highest mark of the year on the event for the Eagles, as she broke her own personal best of 9.750. With momentum on their side, the Eagles headed onto the bars.
Sophomore Jolene Worley would shine for the team by flipping her way to a 9.750 and a first place finish. Junior Emily Cercado finished with a 9.700 and runner-up honors. Going into the third event the Eagles increased their lead to 0.775.
The beam would see four Huskies finish in the top five. Junor Rebecca Fuss (9.650) placed second while the next highest finishing Eagle was Julie Warmbrodt with a tie for fifth (9.575). Eastern was able to claim the event though, edging Northern Illinois by 0.075 as NIU's Jennifer Rice struggled posting a 8.625 in the final rotation.
Vuong captured the floor event with a career-high 9.775. It was followed up with a second place tie by Fuss and sophomore Nicole O'Hara with a mark of 9.750, but it was not enough as NIU captured its lone event on the meet with a team score of 48.175
Voung posted a 38.475 to take the all-around championship, finishing .100 points infront of Fuss. Worley rounded out the all-around with a third place showing with a four-event total of 37.825.
The Eagles hit the road Sunday, Feb. 26, traveling to Kent State University The action gets underway at 2 p.m. at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.
